Ive been to west side chicago/englewood many times. It's not bad if you mind your own business/don't dress like a rich hipster.

Hyde park is not bad at ALL

I think my plane leaves too early for the housing tour.

Not a fan of regents and shoreland is a little bank breaking, anyone have any advice for a place in Hyde park that's reasonable close and decently priced?

Current student here. What exactly did you dislike about Regents/what are you looking for in a building?

If you think it is too expensive but want to be in that general area (for social reasons), I'd suggest checking out the Algonquin complex next door.

If you aren't crazy about living in a big apartment building or want to be closer to the school, look into graduate student housing. I'm not sure exactly how the application process works or how much discretion you get over location selection, but I know that there are units located both very close to the school and closer to the Regents area.

You should check the UChicago Students Taking Questions thread. I live in Scholar's Corner along with 3-4 other 2Ls (in diff apartments) and love it (large 1BR, shared with SO, for a bit over $900/mo). TLC buildings in Hyde Park in general are cheaper and more space than Regents/Shoreland/Del Prado/etc. There are some longer posts in that thread that go over different management companies in Hyde Park. tl;dr probably avoid MAC

Did you stay with a current student? You can ask them, and I'm sure their friends etc have tons of ideas. I heard a lot of these kinds of conversations and recommendations.

The couple I stayed with were paying $1400 in total for a two bedroom apartment and it was *huge*. About 10 mins walk from the law school. I can find out more details for you if you're interested

They seemed to put a big emphasis on personal growth and development, which is something I really liked. Also the strong sense of community. Regents has definitely been crossed off my list, though.

Yeah, I will also be avoiding Regents and Shoreland. It was weird, so many 1/2/3Ls that I talked to said that they didn't live in Regents. I don't think the percentage of 1Ls that live there is as high as people make it sound. I am thinking I'll go with university graduate student housing.

It was really high for the 1Ls in my class, and I think even higher in the past - they've reduced the student discount over the years. Used to be really substantial. From what I heard from 1Ls this year it wasn't as overwhelming in favor of Regents as it used to be - probably a good thing, given there are better apartments for cheaper elsewhere in HP/Chicago.

Shoreland's dope, though. If you don't care about money and want to stay within Hyde Park, I'd live there in a heartbeat. But, if you really really don't care about money, you can find some sick condos on craigslist. Found a 4BR in undergrad for $2k a month that was four bedrooms across three levels, with a fireplace and huge patio. Seems like a lot of people buy condos in Hyde Park as investment and rent them out.

Heard nothing but positive reviews about grad student housing as well. Seems like a great option if you want in-unit washer/dryer or parking. More family-friendly.

Compared to where I stayed (just north of the med. school on Ingleside Ave.) Regents and Shoreland were lacking. The view from the 30th floor of Regents was stunning, but the bedrooms were smallish and parking was insane (>$200/month). The un-renovated units were starting to show their age a bit. Shoreland had an odd chemical/perfume-y smell that permeated the building. Not everyone could smell it, but I thought it was wretched and that alone would rule it out for me. Personally, staying closer to campus away from the lake is a good call, you don't get the views but you'll get a nicer place. At least where I was, traffic noise was nonexistent, which was very nice.

Were you not there? I thought the ASW was fantastic. They did a great job of making Chicago feel distinct from other top law schools. I really bought all the hype around the professors being both phenomenal teachers and unusually accessible. I left feeling very excited to attend. I haven't committed yet, but am working up the courage to do it in the next few hours.

Also, everyone seemed very down to earth. I loved my host, and she seemed to know and like most people there. Maybe my perception here is a direct result of the student hosting program, but it left me feeling great regardless.
