Re: Northwestern Class of 2018
I'm torn between the convenience of Streeterville and the affordability of neighborhoods like Lincoln Park. If you estimate the numbers for living, personal fees and travel fees and divide it by 9, the budget is about $2,026 a month. I'm leaning towards Lincoln Park and the 25-30 minute commute to school but haven't made my final decision yet.

Yep, $2,026 exactly. I don't want to assume I'll be getting a paid 1L summer gig - and if I do get one, I'd like to save the money/spend it on other things.omegaday1500 wrote:I'm torn between the convenience of Streeterville and the affordability of neighborhoods like Lincoln Park. Anyway, brag about your place here when you sign the lease!

cheap, underrated things to do over a weekend in chicago?
I asked in the thread hearsay brought up about things to do in Chicago since I am moving there next month and this was someone's response.
Holly Golightly wrote: Hang out on the beach and drink. Check out rooftop bars downtown. Explore the museums and Lincoln Park Zoo. Get a divvy bike and ride around on the lake path. Explore the many drunk brunch options. Go to some Sox games and a rooftop at a Cubs game (but fuck the Cubs, go Sox). Check out Humboldt Park (the actual park). Find someone with a rooftop pool to hang out with. Hang out in Millennium and Grant Parks. Go up to Milwaukee during Summerfest (you can take a bus or train). While there, drink Spotted Cow and eat a bunch of cheese curds.
I don't know if this got mentioned in the other thread, but there are free concerts in grant park and free movies in parks all over the city all summer. Enjoy it! My pre-1L summer was a blast.

Im in the same boat but looking at Gold Coast and Lincoln Park, not really in Streeterville. I'm leaning towards Gold Coast, though.Kinky John wrote:Yep, $2,026 exactly. I'm looking to spend no more than $1600 and have so far found some good hits, especially just north of Streeterville. Can't imagine paying $2k for a basic setup in Streeterville when that much money would buy you a 2br in Lincoln Park, Lakeview or Wrigleyville.

Old Town is an awesome neighborhood (I'm from Chi), just north or streerville and next to gold coast. Convenient to campus and has a real pulse to it and a great younger vibe whereas streeterville is more nice buildings and no personality. River North is good area also

I've been looking in both of those areas too but there are very few options under $1200 (trying my best to stay under that). A lot of buildings have also told me that they don't have their availability for August yet, which is when I'm planning to move. Fingers crossed something works out! If not, I guess I'll end up in Lincoln Park or the Loop (or just blow my budget? IDK).WhatCouldHaveBeen wrote:Old Town is an awesome neighborhood (I'm from Chi), just north or streerville and next to gold coast. A LOT of places don't have openings this far in advance. I found that very stressful. But keep trying over the next month.hearsay77 wrote:I've been looking in both of those areas too but there are very few options under $1200 (trying my best to stay under that). I've definitely been trying and will keep doing so, but almost every single place has told me they don't have their availability for August yet. The only one that did have a studio open and that I liked was gone before I could give them an answer (literally in 24 hours).rinkrat19 wrote:A LOT of places don't have openings this far in advance. Re: Northwestern Class of 2018
All good points and yes, old town a good 2 bed/2 bath will be 1200-1400 a month per person, with 1200 being a steal and high end going way past 1400. I am living with someone else so don't know as much about prices/pain points for anything that isn't a 2 bedroom.
And correct it's often a month out or even less that one can really see what's available for one's move in date, e.g. July 1 starts will probably sign a lease first third of June or so, Aug 1 first third of July....plenty of exceptions to this but that seems to be a decent general rule of thumb. And totally agree, this is tough because want to plan in advance but the sign-->move-in timeline is a short one at 1 month or less.

I'm visiting mid-June but mostly because I haven't been to Chicago before and I'd like to get a feel for the neighborhoods, not because I'm expecting to lock a place down.
I'll probably be "choosing" a place remotely.

What are people (all of you!) more or less looking to spend a month on rent, regardless of what neighborhood you plan to live in?

Around $1400 hopefully. I'm starting to heavily consider not living in Steeterville, and maybe either doing Ukrainian Village or anywhere close to the red line up to Irving Park. How many of you are looking mainly at Steetetville vs other neighborhoods? I don't want to be the only commuter student.

Trying to keep rent under $1200/month so that after utilities and other random expenses I can be within the $14k loan budget

Re: Northwestern Class of 2018
Hey newbs, I have a LEEWS set and a copy of Getting To Maybe. (I bought them both used but I never cracked either one, which probably helps explain my 1L grades. Good condition on the book, perfect condition on LEEWS.) LEEWS goes for $175 new, but if someone is in town already and nearby campus and wants to come get it from me, I'll sell LEEWS (including Primer) and GTM for $75.
