What are some tips to be successful at NU?
Do the reading and be diligent but get hella wasted at bar reviews every Thursday!

Is it worth living close to campus and paying $$$? I am considering it, only because I've always lived pretty close to campus and I really dislike commuting. Also, has anyone used their aid package as evidence that they could afford the place?

For me, living close is worth it bc I'm hella lazy.. I just wouldn't go to class cuz it's so far. For 1L year though, Id live close whether or not you're a lazy person. You wanna have the least annoyances as possible outside of studying. Also, if you sacrifice ~5 minutes of walking, you can live in Gold Coast, which isn't a bad place to live really.

Don't really know what your last question meant.

I live very close and pay the extra money. If you really dislike commuting, then that may be the answer. I didn't do an extensive search to see the price differences as you moved away from the law school, but I imagine you can save $5K/year by living further away. It's not really an objective decision though, so weigh your options.

As for the 2nd question, I didn't do it, but I'm pretty sure others have. I bet a forum search would yield you some results.

I MIGHT be able to swing zero debt if I get a good paying 2L SA and live on the cheap due to some savings/ED scholarship. I think the advantages of living close might outweigh the cost though. I should be graduating with minimal debt regardless. I'll probably end up biting the bullet and living close at least for my 1L year. I think I am the kind of person that's chances of missing class would increase with a much longer commute.

Ahh thanks, I'll double check with the forum search.

Do you like it there enough to recommend it? When do you think is a good time to start the actually looking process, I've seen some places have waitlists and such.

I think it depends on your preferences and if you have any outside help (such as savings or parental assistance). I'm living entirely off loans, and from what I had heard from people, living near school is going to cost you $1200-1500 a month without a roommate. I decided to live much farther north from school because I'm living off loans and I would rather have financial flexibility than spend most of my financial aid on rent. That being said, the commute kind of sucks in the winter. I live about 30-35 minutes north via public transit and 20 minutes north if you have a car (probably outing myself to Ihavnt with this post haha), but my rent is $790 all utilities included (including wifi) and I am in a safe area. So it's just a matter of personal preference.

Nope. The CTA is amazing and the school is close to the Red Line. I personally think Lincoln Park/Lake View is the way to go.

What are some things you wish you had known about Northwestern before starting? About law school in general?

Looking back would you do your 1L differently and in what ways?

Does anyone know the dollar amount of scholarships one would expect from Northwestern if they are a non-ED applicant (I believe they call them 'grants' but they are synonymous with being scholarships)?
