Is it possible at all to smoke inside Hughes? Are the front doors to buildings sheltered a bit so youre not out in the wind? Can you smoke in bars in Ithaca? And are smokes really $12-14 for a pack of 20?

Could be wrong, but I don't think there is any bar in America anymore that lets you smoke inside.

Ive been to florida bars where you can smoke haha...its actually very weird

PM'd.

Did you sign a lease already? I started to look around and was wondering what people's general thoughts are on the matter (i.e. To Hughes or or not to Hughes, is CT Terrace worth the money, how nice are the other places comparatively, how to find roommates, etc).

You can definitely smoke inside of many bars/clubs in FL/GA/NC/SC

Cool map! So when students typically go out on the weekends/bar review, is that mainly in college town?

There'll be a number of events in the downtown/commons area. Those bars/lounges are usually nicer, per Ithaca standards (with an exception...). But I'd say you're primarily in Collegetown, which there are plenty of watering holes that will do just fine around there.

Collegetown and The Commons (Downtown). The Commons is literally a 10 minute walk downhill, so it's not a big deal either way (except during like January/February when it's really cold out...although even then, you're probably a good bit liquored up before you go out). Rullofs, Moonies (ultimate shit-show....ultimate shit-show...but in the best way imaginable), Lot 10, Level B, and Pixel are basically the only places to go out around the Cornell area and are just rotated through often.

There are also bar tabs that are put on by clubs (Cornell Law Students Association provides money for clubs to host their own "bar tabs" and they're almost always open to the public). Also, once or twice a month, the law school puts on a "mixer" where they provide free wine/beer and hor doeurves (sp? whatever) for like two hours and you can mingle with professors/the dean.

In general, I say if you can do Hughes, do Hughes for the sole reason that finding a sublease is a nightmare. Otherwise, CT Terrace I would say is worth the money, assuming money is not an issue. If you do want to save money/loans/whatever there are plenty of housing options in the area that are cheaper (600-800 range) and are just fine. Just don't go in expecting lavish living either.

In terms of roommates, probably in a couple of weeks at most (if not already) people will be posting on the facebook group looking for roommates. Also feel free to post to look for one as well, I did last year and I got a bunch inquiries pretty quickly. And this was like late May-ish or so.

You are way ahead of me. I'm not even 100% sure about Cornell yet and I just started apartment searching. I don't think I'm going to do Hughes, but from all the good things I'm hearing I might reconsider.

And thanks for the lowdown on the bar locations! Runinthefront and runthetrap1990! I'm looking forward to checking these places out.

Does Cornell offer overnight hosting for admitted student day? A lot of other schools let you stay with a current student

I don't think so, unless you are going through a student organization like the APASA for Diversity Weekend.

Do the 1Ls never go to Chapter House or something?

Seems accurate. I think admissions asked for volunteers to host students last year and it didn't work out, so I don't believe they bothered asking this year. I know APALSA, LALSA, and probably BLSA have asked for volunteers to host.

Does everyone receive their reward notification before the first deposit date? (I have submitted the fin aid information sheet weeks ago, but have yet to receive mine) Or should I be asking the financial aid office about it?

How many weeks has it been? I'd say if it's been more than 2 or 3 weeks, it's OK to email them and ask for confirmation that they received it. The applicants thread has had a few users post that the office denied ever receiving the FA info sheets... Oops.

Have any Hughes offers gone out yet? I've sort of been waiting that out before looking into leases and it's making me a bit anxious knowing that I should be signing a lease ASAP if they don't have room there.

I imagine some of the current students can answer this, but the two retail companies I talked to said they both have plenty of places open. They also mentioned there's usually a big rush around the last week of April / the first week of May. Before then is early for first years, after means you might not have as wide of a selection as you would like. Not sure how true this is, but I figured I'd pass the info along.

Edited for typos

That's great to know thanks!

Also when would be a good time to check out apartments? I'm thinking ASW

Just set up and sat in on a CLE titled "Doing M&A Deals in Israel" at my firm. I was like a kid in a candy store. Yeah.. I pretty much can't wait to be a lawyer.

Anyone else itt interested in international transactions?

Submitted FA info sheets 3 weeks ago, received confirmation a few days later. Then last week received an email stating that I have yet to submit info sheet, asked to double check, and got an email earlier this week confirming reception of materials.

Should I now ask them for a timeline, or just wait patiently having received a second confirmation of receipt?

Wow that sucks. But since the second confirmation only came a few days ago, I think waiting would be the better option.

That being said, I'd personally feel nervous/annoyed/antsy. Maybe call, gently remind them that you have deadlines coming up, and ask for a general timeline so you can plan appropriately and figure out deposit strategies? (Is this too passive aggressive?)

Did people who applied for merit $$ and loans submit both their tax transcript and their parents?

Yea - Reasonably certain Cornell said they wanted both.

I didn't, and I still got a merit scholarship offer. Pretty sure parent info is only for need based scholarships.
