Thank you, ASW mock case, for being the only reason I could credibly explain to my boss why everyone was excited about typos today.

Is anyone else in gropius worried about starvation? Cooking in the communal kitchen out of a mini fridge sounds horrible, and I haven't heard much about meal plans.

The Hark is open every day. That's where most of Gropius eats.

No meal plans though.

How would you rate quality to price at the Hark? I saw menus available online, but how are the prices?

Not that it actually really matters cuz I will probably end up eating there regardless when I get super lazy

The prices make no sense. Most of the food (other than chicken tenders, cheeseburgers, sushi, and other staples) are priced by the ounce. The first few weeks you'll pay attention to that and try to get things that are light weight. Then you'll realize that that is a lot of work.

I'm probably not the best to comment on quality because I love cafeteria food. But it's fine.

For lunch on weekdays, you can pretty much always eat free at a lunch talk. So there's that option if you're into saving money.

Scroll down to the income formula section; there's also a calculator for you to play around with.

So let's say you get a 1L firm job in NYC, and you work for ten weeks and make the standard $30k. Let's also assume you have no dependents and aren't paying off a car. Plug that into the calculator and your total allowances come out to $14k, but that's with taxes factored in. In reality, your take home is the CoL allowance ($7400) plus whatever's left over after your student contributions (~$14.5k), which is ~$1600 in this example. So a total of $9000 for the summer.

But say you work in-house in NYC instead, and get paid like $20k for the summer. You get to take home CoL and whatever's left over, which comes out to $8282 in this case.

So at the end of the day two separate positions with a $10k income differential really hashes out to be a <$800 difference if you're getting assistance from HLS.

Damn I'm glad you mentioned that. Changes my debt calculations by a couple tens of thousands of dollars..

There is a very minimal financial incentive to try to work a firm gig your 1L summer then? Interesting.

I would say there's very little financial incentive to do a 1L summer at a firm if you are receiving a grant, by basically obliterating any money you would've gotten. If you are just on loans, why not? It lowers your "assistance", yes, but if that means lower loans, all the better.

nope there's just HUH which is by no means cheap :(

Also does anyone have a list of the upcoming deadlines? I figured someone else out there must have one before I start compiling a list...

Well, unless xe is also attending the law school. Hastings is doubles.

Otherwise why would you want to move your non-law-school SO into a dorm?

I don't know how complete this is, but there is a checklist on the admitted students page here: https://www.law.harvard.edu/prospective ... index.html

I think the only things that are missing/more specific from the emails:

August 7 - deadline to upload your photo (as opposed to midAug)
As soon as possible? - apply for Supplemental loans if applicable to your situation

Thanks!

I also I vaguely remember Harvard saying that all loans were assumed accepted unless you specifically tell them that you don't want a certain amount of loans. Do you guys know when the deadline for informing them about that is?

You might as well get a 2br apartment with your own kitchen and bathroom for the money it would take to get a 2 bed suite in Hastings.

And yeah, dorms are cramped. You would not want to bring your SO to live with you there.

I actually know the answer to this. I asked the office and got this (2 days ago):

Thanks for your message. If you do not want the federal Stafford loan, please complete and submit the HLS Loan Adjustment-Cancellation form on the following link to our website:

https://hls.harvard.edu/dept/sfs/financ ... -web-form/

Once that has been received by our office, we will cancel the loan and remove it from your aid package so the funds will no longer be reflect as anticipated aid on your student billing account. You should do this as soon as possible (this week) so your bill will be accurate.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Have a great day.

Also Mack, joining us at HLS over SLS now?

So is there a reason I've been getting the email about my clinical email address every day for a week? Was there some action I was supposed to take on it that I just missed?

Yup, I've had it for ages. And I can log into the clinical email address/everything else just fine.
