Domus, Evo, Radian, Left Bank, the hub on chestnut, 2400 chestnut come to mind, roughly in that order of niceness/upscale. That said, my personal conviction is they are all overpriced and the best deals are to be found in one off Craig's list ads.

Just wondering to the extent there is non JW/Levy merit and to what extent need aid exists separate and apart from merit at Penn.

I received both merit and need aid. Not a JW or Levy. Or Toll.

was the merit called a dean's scholarship? Or was it not named?

They tell me they are almost out of money. I told them I was "pleading on bended knee" for a more generous offer.

Hey guys! Just a quick housing question - I am looking for an apartment and notice that rents are significantly cheaper to the west of campus - I understand that this is away from town/less desirable, but are there additional reasons (i.e. safety/dodgy surroundings) for the price discrepancy? Any knowledge would be much appreciated! Thank you :D

Its generally understood that the neighborhoods get a little sketchier the further west you get. I'd be fine with anything east of 50th and north of Baltimore, but thats just me. Most students probably won't venture past the low 40s if I had to guess.

Edit: I'd also set the northern boundary at market street if you're at/near the 50s

Living here for two years now, I'd generally agree with this. Between 42th and 50th is generally OK, as long as you're South of Market and really even south of Chestnut. You can go as far down as Baltimore and be totally fine, and even a few blocks south of that. Not the very best neighborhoods, but still totally fine and much cheaper rent

So is Penn supposed to release more merit aid decisions any time soon?

Yeah non-named merit $ is awarded as a "Dean's Scholarship".

According to their website Dean's scholarships max out at 60K per year over three years. Has anyone gotten more than that?

Edit: changed per year to over three years. 60K per year would be magical.

If I'm reading things correctly, the deadline to commit to enrolling at Penn is May 1. Kinda sucks for anyone hoping to ride a WL somewhere else. Also you can't use a penn scholly for leverage past May 1.

So everyone's awards should be pretty much finalized in the next couple of weeks.

In the Penn law acceptance email it says, "The Commitment to Matriculate form and the Tuition Deposit are due May 1, 2015".

In signing the Commitment to Matriculate form, aren't you committing to enroll at Penn? It seems that way based on what the form itself says:

WITH THE SUBMISSION OF THIS FORM, I CERTIFY THAT I AM COMMITTING TO MATRICULATE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA LAW SCHOOL. UNLESS EXEMPTED BY A SCHOLARSHIP AGREEMENT, I UNDERSTAND THAT THE $500 TUITION DEPOSIT FEE IS REQUIRED OF ALL ENROLLING STUDENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA LAW SCHOOL AND THAT THE FEE WILL BE APPLIED TO MY FIRST TERM TUITION BILL. I ALSO UNDERSTAND THAT THIS TUITION DEPOSIT IS NONREFUNDABLE.

but then I'm not really sure what the point of the deposit is if that's the case.

You probably have to withdraw from schools you're already accepted at, but schools straight up aren't allowed to make you withdraw from pending/WL schools

You don't have to withdraw from schools you are pending at or waitlisted at. Only acceptances and scholarships

Also you can double deposit until may 15th. If you're just depositing and not accepting a scholarship with specific withdrawal stipulations you don't have to withdraw from anywhere until May 15th
