Has anyone received their admission follow-up email yet? My status checker says that it was sent on 12/19, but it's not in my inbox or my spam folder.

Re: University of Pennsylvania c/o 2018 Admits
Hi guys! just had a question about placement. How well does Penn place in California? The lawyers I've talked to tell me that it shouldnt be a problem for my case since I'm from Socal and went to college in LA so I have ties, but I was curious to see what percentage of Penn law grads choose to practice in California. I'm also curious if the Career services office at Penn law has advisors who help people targeting non-NYC biglaw.

Re: University of Pennsylvania c/o 2018 Admits
7.1% of 2013 Penn Law grads are working in California according to Penn's website. But I guess we can't really use this metric to say anything about how "well" (or how effectively) Penn places in Cali because we don't know the ratio of the number of students that get employed in Cali vs. the number that want employment there.UCLABruins2015 wrote:Hi guys! just had a question about placement. Im from NorCal and Ive heard the same thing from multiple people. A NorCal friend of mine did her UG and LS at UMich and just got herself a job in SF BigLaw. I know it's an anecdote, but I still think the general consensus is that being from Cali should make it considerably easier to get Cali BigLaw after doing LS on the eastcoast/midwest. If you're someone with strong ties, I *think* your chances at California BigLaw should be around the same as your chances at NYC BigLaw from Penn. Hopefully someone who isn't a 0L can weigh in on this.UCLABruins2015 wrote:The lawyers I've talked to tell me that it shouldnt be a problem for my case since I'm from Socal and went to college in LA so I have ties, but I was curious to see what percentage of Penn law grads choose to practice in California.
I haven't looked it up, but I would be shocked if they didn't.UCLABruins2015 wrote:I'm also curious if the Career services office at Penn law has advisors who help people targeting non-NYC biglaw

I've heard that most grad students prefer to live in the Rittenhouse square area, but those places look to be around 1400 just for a studio.grizzlybear wrote:anyone have any insights as to housing? where do most law students (and med and other grad students) live? areas as well as specific complexes?

Rittenhouse is really nice, but it's not particularly close and it's pretty pricy. Most people I know are in west Philly south of market and as far west as 50th. Many popular options on this side of the river. The hub, domus(way expensive though) left bank, etc. Personally I'd scour Craig's list and find a private deal, you can usually get a better deal this way.kikivandy wrote:I've heard that most grad students prefer to live in the Rittenhouse square area, but those places look to be around 1400 just for a studio.grizzlybear wrote:anyone have any insights as to housing? where do most law students (and med and other grad students) live? areas as well as specific complexes?

Re: University of Pennsylvania c/o 2018 Admits
I brought my car and almost never move it at all. Philly has great public transportation and relatively cheap cabs/everything you need is generally close, so you don't need a car. That said, it comes in handy for larger big box store runs and on breaks for getting out of town. Ultimately it depends where you end up moving, I'm pretty close to the school and near a subway stop, but other people are more secluded and would prob benefit more from a car. Parking is generally tough for free around here, although I know there is a Penn parking program (but I think it's pricy). Basically my answer is it'll work either way depending on where you end up, I generally get parking right on my street but don't take the car because it's usually harder to park wherever it is I'm going. I use it so infrequently I had to set a recurring alarm to remind me to go start it once in a while.xylocarp wrote:would you recommend bringing a car to philly if you already have one, or is it an unnecessary hassle? is there law school parking/does anybody drive?Clearly wrote:1L checking in to answer questions if needed.

Congrats everyone! I'm a current 2L- PM me if you have any questions. Happy to help with anything.
I have lived in Center City the last two years so I can give you the alternate perspective. I love living in CC and having more of a "in the middle of it all" kinda experience. Totally a matter of personal preference (and price range), but it is pretty standard for people to do 1L in Ucity and 2L-3L in CC.
