Hi team!

Anybody know if GULC reimburses any travel funds for the ASWs? I really want to go but I'm in California and am pretty damn poor.

:( no

A Note for Travelers

Due to budgetary constraints, the Office of Admissions is unable to provide travel stipends to admitted students who plan to attend the January Open House for Admitted Students or other recruitment events.

Are you for sure going, Gray? I had a feeling that you were holding out for Northwestern.

lol no I've been a 100% GULC from the beginning. I'm just obsessing over NU because it's TLS.

One thing I wish they did that I saw doing my graduate student recruiting is provide food from local, non-subway caterers. At Cornell for our recruiting weekends we do a "taste of Ithaca" where we order food from a ton of local places to give the prospectives a view of the local food scene. At the student organization fair one group got great samosas from a local place and we had a good discussion about the local food and good places to eat around Georgetown. Where you'll eat is going to be a non-negligible expense for your three years and I'd like to know that there are good local places around so I won't be stuck with just subway or cafeteria food for three years.

The dinner on the first night wasn't too bad.

On the plus side, DC has got a great food scene.

I was only able to go for the Alumni Panel which was, I agree navykev, awesome.
I was turned off a little bit because my student liaison never met up with me even after I called and texted him a few times. I felt like I was flying a little blind coming in late in the day and having no guidance really.

I was seriously overdressed, but generally I'm okay with that. Also super awkward. And felt weird talking to the K-JD's with their parents lurking..

Hopefully I'll catch some of you at the March one (hoping to be able to get to the whole 2 days).
Really really really want to do the Supreme Court Tour.

Since TLS loves to hate on GULC and its big law placement, it was really interesting to listen to alumni and current students talk about their career paths. A lot of folks there are interested in government, national security, public interest, and countless other fields of law. So I definitely got the sense that Georgetown's big law placement numbers are a result of many of its students self-selecting out of that field. It just goes to show how statistics/ online forums really don't give you a full picture.

Yeah I am for sure in that category. I get the impression that you still have to be well above median at GULC to have a shot at a lot of those jobs though.

You'd be surprised. While the DC market is pretty saturated, there are a lot of jobs that people can get without rockstar grades. Sure you won't get DOJ honors at median, but there are definitely lots of opportunities especially considering where the school is located. And there is the benefit that there are plenty of people near the top of the classes who DO go for biglaw. It is altogether a good place to network your face off.

You missed a great supreme court tour. It was the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, so there were protesters all around the place and security was kind of on edge, but the docent was very good and the museum on the first floor was quite cool.

Anyone who talks seriously about GULCs placement will mention this as a factor. If you combed these forums for input on Georgetown, you'd think we were all signing up for an online JD program.

Yeah - I tend to agree based on the research I've done. I was probably one of the only tree huggers that actually visited the Office of Public Interest and Community Service at GULC. They have all kinds of resources and programs to "get your foot in the door" in the public service industry. Check out the 1L Pro Bono Project: http://www.law.georgetown.edu/careers/o ... roject.cfm

The alumni panel discussion had two alum that serve in the public service sector and both said similar things when evaluating applicants - grades are not as important to them as they are at big firms. They look for people that have demonstrated a committment to their cause. Of course the panel was made up of all Georgetown alum and they were there to try to convince us to go to Georgetown but I don't think any of them were disingenuous.

All that being said - Im sure good grades along with an interest in public service work is ideal - but not required.

I do think if you are big law or bust - there are probably better options but I think if you're committed to public service or are unsure and want to explore lots of different options - I don't think any other T14 school gives you the kind of exposure and year round opportunities to explore the different routes a JD can take you. But I'm a little biased! :)

Nothing yet, although I noticed they took down the "Available in late January" on the ASW.
