There was an option on the application to be considered for just summer, both summer and fall, or just fall. I too am a summer starter, not totally decided yet but leaning toward michigan. Seems like I'd be on the younger side from the posts above, lol.

Excuse me if this has been asked already, I selected the either fall/summer option and was admitted into the summer start program but now would prefer a fall start. Does anyone know of any precedent of someone switching out of summer start?

In my app I specified I wanted summer, but they admitted me for fall and I had a nice conversation with the admissions office (who I need to get back with about this, whoops) about why I probably shouldn't do summer start when coming straight from undergrad. It didn't seem like a big deal for them to switch me from fall to summer if I had chosen to go that way so I don't see why it would be any different the other way around. I'd just contact them now because they told me they needed to know if I wanted to switch by the first couple weeks of February.

Thanks for the responses, I'll contact them ASAP then.

Got the call from Dean Zearfoss today offering the Darrow!!! It was outside the 2-week timeframe originally outlined in the invitation (I got the call about 16 days after I interviewed).

Well Michael Phelps went there, so they definitely have a pool. As for the second question, all I could find was this listing the hours, but maybe a current student there could shed more light on this.

Are there people who interviewed for the Darrow, didn't get offered the Darrow, but were then offered a Dean's Scholarship? What was the rough timeframe? (Feel free to PM)

You can use gym facilities for free during any semester in which you are an enrolled student. I think the IM building is the closest rec building to the law campus- right around like a 10-minute walk

For summer starters, does accepting summer start mean you're giving up/withdrawing from any/all waitlists you might still have at that point? I know a lot of wait lists don't move until June/July, at which point we would already be halfway through our first semester, so I assume we would have to withdraw waitlists and give up on them, but just looking for some clarification.

The CCRB and the IM building are essentially equidistant from the law school so take your pick

Single folks unite! I'm kind of glad at this point, I don't need the stress of 1L, being maid of honor in my sister's wedding, and a long-distance relationship all at once...

FYI, Dean Z said that scholarship awards are bundled weekly and entered on Fridays, and they will go online (in the personal award section of the admitted students site) on Saturdays!

I'm not sure about the dean's scholarships. I think people just find out on the website (no email)?

Mine came via email in December prior to showing up on the website

Guys I have a question about summer start:

do law firms actually hire associates in March after we graduate in December? Because I have to think about my visa status: I will be able to legally stay in the U.S. for only one year after graduation before the future employers sponsor my H1-B working visa. So if we graduate in December, I will have 60 days' grace period for OPT, and then 1 year of OPT, that will be Feb 2019. But the H1-B application process does not open until April 1st, which means if I have to wait until September 2018 to get a job in law firm (let's just assume that I can actually get one), my legal residency status will expire before the H1-B application window opens.

Therefore, my problem is: if I want to stay in the U.S. after graduation to work in law firms, I can only a) make sure I will be able to start working in March 2018 so that law firms will be able to submit the files or whatever it might need to sponsor my H1-B visa when April 1st comes, OR b) take one semester off and graduate in May 2018 as most students do.

The thing about the route B is that I will probably face some difficulties when trying to go back to the U.S. after I take one semester off. The Visa Officer will definitely be like: why did you do that in the first place? Is it because you want to permanently work in the U.S.? -- Denied! ....

Some firms do. Since the summer start is unique among top law schools, there often isn't a set policy on it. You'd have to check with specific firms whether they'd allow you to start earlier.

Another thing to keep in mind is that if you start early enough (i.e.: beginning of March), your firm might treat you as part of the previous year's cohort and advance you with them. Again, this is case by case and depends on the particular firm.

Hello summer starters! I am looking to sublet my apartment for the summer, and thought you all would potentially be interested. Here is a link to the ad on craigslist - http://annarbor.craigslist.org/sub/4885897937.html - generally I've heard it is hard for summer starters to find a sublet because the law school summer session differs from the main campus's calendar, but mine will be available for your whole summer semester.
