Can someone help me understand UBE scoring?

Postby Impishee » Fri Jan 06, 2017 5:10 pm

Taking in MO, which requires 260.

For the essays, I've seen some places say the MPT is scored on a 1-6 scale. However, this website makes it seem like (at least MO is 10). Is that standard?

If it's 10, would this mean you receive a score 1-10 and then, since the two MPT scores are worth 80 points total, whichever score out of 10 you get, you multiply 80 by that (ex: receive score of 6.5 on MPT. Multiply 80 x .65=52 points towards overall essay score (minus scaling)?

That's why I cited to that exact page in the OP. I'm trying to understand if my reading of it is correct.

Whoops, sorry. My understanding from what the document says is that the essays are worth 60 points total (10 points each) and the MPTs are worth 20 points total (10 points each), and then it's scaled from that 80 point total up to a 200 point scale. I'm confused where you got the idea that the MPTs are worth 80 points?

I don't think there is any magical calculation you can make since there's no way to know how exactly they scale it to 200 and they "adjust for possible differences in the difficulty of the essay questions or in the harshness of the essay grading from one exam administration to another." My state is not UBE but also scales essays like this and I got something like a 95/150 (i can't remember exactly) and that scaled to a 135 - however, they don't tell us what the highest possible score was.

Are you taking a bar course? The company should give you the info about what a "passing" score is on an essay/MPT. It's okay to get below what they say is passing on some if you're above average on others - I had 15 essays and was only above passing on 6 of those 15 on the actual bar exam.
