Depend on how "ok" you are with MBE. Here's a chart from last July, you need 266 to pass.

getting 80% + correct on the barbri MBE questions. how bad can I do at the essay portion and still pass? At this point, I don't have enough time to listen to those lectures so I will probably just read the CMR for topics tested most frequently and pray for MBE topics to show up on the essay portion

80% on the simulated MBE? You're probably in the 99 if not 100 percentile. So all you need is a 90ish on your essays or less. I.e. don't turn in blank sheets and you'll pass.

I haven't taken the simulated MBE yet (I am assuming that's the 200 question MBE set). I probably will over the weekened. I have been doing the MPQ 18 question sets for the MBE topics and consistently getting 13-16 correct. I am guessing the score will drop some on the simulated MBE but it sounds like I should be okay

I have yet to open the books on IL topics so hopefully it is as easy as you are saying

Thanks

How are people handling the Illinois distinctions for the essay portion? I am trying to come up with a good strategy and I just can not figure out how to prepare for it.

It is no longer an MEE subject but it could still be tested in the IEE. I am just watching the barbri lecture for it and praying that it doesn't show up on the test.

So is anyone actually studying for Tax, Admin, Suretyship, and Personal Property? Tax has never been tested and the other three have only been tested one time since 2004

I am skipping those + commercial paper during the final week. I will make shit up if they happen to come up based on what little I remember from the lectures

petersond wrote:Hi all, first post ever, hoping you can answer a question.

I'm already a licensed attorney in one state, and now I am preparing to take the Illinois bar. The bar exam I took in 2012 didn't have MEE or MPT (or IEE, obviously.) I read somewhere that the MEEs can be graded as to Illinois law, or as to common law, and it's up to the jurisdiction to decide which. I have not been able to figure out whether Illinois uses common law or Illinois-specific state law.

Also, my strategy this time was to focus on the MBE, as I did exceptionally well on that last time, and I know that if I score well enough on the MBE again, I'll have a lot of leeway on my essays. In this final home stretch, how would you suggest I allocate my remaining time? I am also working full time, but my job isn't SO demanding, as far as hours. (I have my old materials from my current state's 2012 bar, as well as a bunch of Illinois BarBri materials from 2012 that I was gifted. I also have compiled some resources on civ pro, since that wasn't tested when I took the bar the first time.)

Any guidance would be appreciated! Taking the exam in a state I didn't go to school in, don't know any lawyers in, and is so different from my own state's....it's interesting. Thanks!

You don't have to spend one minute studying Illinois law (at least the specific distinictions). With regards to IL essays, just cite what you know from the MBE subjects. For example, a "contract needs an offer and acceptance." However, on the Illinois part of the exams simply state, under Illinois law, a contract is formed when there is an offer and acceptance. Or state: "Illinois recognizes comparative negligence. Under Illinois law, (then simply cite the rule from the MBE subjects).

Also, a lot of points can be gained from the IL essays so I wouldn't foregoe those easy points. The essays are easy and you don't have to be pefrect. Even if you don't know one or two subjects, you can still pass if you know enough of the other topics.

So fellow IL takers, anyone know what we should do with lunches? Do we pack food in a ziplock bag (though we were told no food or drinks allowed) and put it into the 2.5G bag together with laptop and all? 45 min is surely not enough time to go find food, come back through security and be seated.

you have to leave the food in the designated storage area and hope that no one else takes it

For those of you taking it at the UIC Pavilion - there's nothing to worry about when leaving your stuff in the "designated storage area." That designated area is actually the bleachers/seating in the same place where you take the exam (exam tables are set up on the gym floor so all the pavilion seating area is completely empty, which is where you leave your stuff).

Because bar exam results are coming out in two(!) weeks and we got or change of address email, I'm bumping this thread. I am totally freaking out. I go through days where I'm sure I'll pass because the essays were pretty easy, but on other days I'm convinced I failed because of the score increase and because the MBE kicked my ass. Just can't wait for all this to (hopefully) be over in two weeks

The MBE was tough. I left out the IEE and MPT feeling good. MEE was ok, but when the time came for the MBE I felt like I was in bizarro world. Any one else feeling that way?

I dreaded the MEE/IEE before the test, I am dreading the MBE after the test.

All of this. I had been worrying so much about the MBE and not about the essays that I've now almost convinced myself that I probably missed tons of stuff on the essays and didn't realize it, and that's why I feel okay about them.

I left out IEE and MPT feeling good, 'like wow I was on top of it.' The more and more I sit and ponder though, the more I feel unsure. I am trying not to play 'Monday morning QB' but its tough with all the time on your hands with the wait.

One week to go? Do you guys think we will definitely find out on October 1st? That seems to be the trend.

Last two years they started "posting" results on Oct 1. Does that mean we will get it on the same day? idk. I hope so...

I just found out that my wonderful workplace is planning a "fun event" on October 1st. I'm pretty sure I failed and I hate that I'm going to disappoint everyone. Also, it will probably be a slightly awkward celebration if I failed.
