Reading Rate (WPM) of law students

Post by j.a.p.1440 » Tue Mar 07, 2017 2:27 am

How fast should a law student be able to read? I mean that in terms of word per minute read on average.

Whatever speed allows you to comprehend and retain the substance of what is being read.

Yes, I know but how fast, on average, does a law student read? I'm asking more out of sheer curiosity and am not looking to hit a certain WPM because other students read at a given rate.

Some speed readers do. I'm not saying that I plan on speed reading in law school when I start 1L this fall, I plan on taking my time. I ask out of sheer curiosity.

I can go about 500-600 when I am fresh and really into what I'm reading. I'd say comprehension is at 80% though. So, I guess it's not the most ideal. I'm curious is any 3Ls can get up to that rate after lots of exposure to legal text. If we have to read roughly 300 pages per night, I'd hope as time goes on the reading gets easier.

765. Although I can't claim spectacular retention at that speed, I suspect.

I got 563 and 100% of the questions (though most of them were trivially easy). I regularly got 100% on LSAT RC section so neither stunned nor surprised.

That's a sincere question. My law school told me that there would be up 500 pages per night, but usually about 300. Is this some 0L scare tactic or is my school just that effing evil?

50-60 probably. Still takes a while while you're still learning how to read cases

What the..? Why would they tell 300-500? 50-60 seem like nothing.

It's just a completely different type of reading than you're thinking of. This is a bit of an extreme example, but look through this case and flag all the terms you're not familiar with. Then, imagine there's a chance you'll get grilled on very fine points in front of 100 people the next day. For a more modern example, go through the same exercise with this (skip the syllabus).

e. That being said, I think the amount of work needed to do well in law school is somewhat overstated.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
