One of the 1Ls that I met told me that it was very hard to get a 1L summer job in Chicago, but not as difficult to find something in Indianapolis...but then again that guy was from Indianapolis, so would it be easier for me since I'm from Chicago, or is that irrelevant? Also, are people landing summer positions in DC? I know that a group of 1Ls took a trip out there for an IU job fair. Thanks.

To clarify do you mean jobs as in Big law SA's? For big law Indy, Louisville is all I have really heard, and even then very few 1l's get SA's. so its true that chicago would be near impossible for a big law SA 1L summer (but really i htink i know like 3 people that have SA's at all). but for Judges, DA's, USAO's, Legal services, and other agencies, chicago would be the same, and having ties to the area would certainly help. I think it for sure helps to be from the area, I'm working at Fed court in CA, and Im sure its cuz I was from there. 1L SA's are really about luck though, and personally I didn't even apply to any.

As for general 1L jobs, I know a handful that are working in DC at various places, not sure if they got them from the trip or not.

There is also a good deal that are working in CHicago, I think I even saw a fb group haha.

Edit to add: I think at this point most of my friends have jobs, and the ones that don't I think will in a week or two.

Alright, thanks! I wasn't talking about biglaw SAs, since I'm sure it's rare for 1Ls to get those. It's good to know that most of your friends have jobs lined up, some even in Chicago and DC (I'm from the DC area, but I've lived in Chicago for awhile, so I have ties to both areas...even though I'm not sure the ties really matter if you're applying for fed jobs in DC.)

So, just to clarify, a lot of people from IU are working for Judges, DAs, USAOs, etc. in Chicago?

I'm actually hoping to work for a fed court (or maybe an agency) as well, but that might change during my first year of law school. Appreciate the help!

I was just listing those as jobs in general, Im not sure exactly in chicago, though I would assume that people do. I think if you apply early (for those jobs likely over winter break) and just mass mail courts or agency, you will have a good chance at getting a job in that area ealry and not worrying about it.

I know IU has one alumn on the7th COA, but he is in Indy I believe. There are also several District court judges that are alumns. THat being said, I got a job with a fed court in CA, so Im sure its possible in Chicago where name req is much much higher.

Totally doable. I know a good handful with positions in Chicago for the summer. Not sure how many are paid, but the market is pretty bad. Actually I got hooked up with a DC position through OCPD despite my bitching about OCPD. I would like to point out it's my number 2 destination, but it's pretty close to what I was looking for.

Being from Chicago would be a big plus and all. Looking at just general legal internship job sites, there aren't a lot of internships in Chicago at least for this summer. Next summer, hopefully, but the majority of internships seem to be DC/NY, and of course we have the Indy connection here. You just need to apply to DC early, because they get a lot of applicants.

So question for Spoon and whoever else is in class with us: are you gonna give all this background stuff like the model? I mean it seems like he wants a case cite, a rule statement, a in depth history of how the rule progressed, application to the facts, and then throw in any other rules connected to the theory regardless if they have no application to the facts.

Like seriously in his answer he brought up tacking in Adv Poss. when there was only one Adv Possesser for the entire statutory period. Why should we have to point out that tacking is not relevant when it so clearly is not part of the analysis lol.

I thought the point of law school was to discern the issues, apply the law, and not write about what is not relevant?

Yeah, he is asking for a lot, and as far as I can tell, he isn't going to get it. I think he mentions the cases in the sample answers as an outline to give you an idea. If he wanted the case names, he should assign less or allow at least some form outline.

Uh, basically, if I know something related to the subject, I'm going to write it down. Whether CL, trend, or policy, if I know it, I will probably just vomit it up on the paper. All in all there doesn't seem to be much actual "issue spotting" in his past tests. I think there is so much to cover in the class the test can't be that crazy. If he wants us to get conveyances, possessory estates and future interests (for what reason... I'm not sure) and all the case names and history for takings, easements, leaseholds with landlord tenant duties, co-ownerships, marital interests, and possession, let us bring in an outline or something.

ChewbaccaDefense wrote:I'm getting ready to head into Bloomington this month to nail down my apartment for next year. I know Poolside tends to be popular with law students. It look pretty good, but can anybody tell me if the pool is indoor or outdoor?

I've also been looking at these other properties:

Bicycle Apts (200 S Madison), Campus Walk (520 N Grant), Canadian Apts (327/329 W 1st St), Maple Leaf Apts (407 S Dunn), Maple Grove (408 S Dunn).

Any opinions on these, particularly for somebody who is moving to Bloomington without a car? Oh yeah, and I'm old-ish (28) and would like to see if I can put some distance between myself and undergrads.

Also, are there any bus lines that stand out as preferable than the others as far as frequency of buses, later operating times, coverage of the city, etc?

I've heard the same thing about Poolside--I walked by when i was in Bloomington coupla weeks ago--looked dirty and rundown, but the location is good and apparently lots of law students end up there. I have a car and a motorcycle and another motorcycle but i want to be within walking/stumbling home drunk distance. And I understand the need to avoid undergrads. I'm a little older myself.

Attempt one set of finals in the library and you will want to murder the lot of them, not simply "avoid". Unrelated, but just blowing off some steam. Even ATL pointed out that Duke has an anti-undergrad in the law library facebook group. It's terrible.

To be totally fair, if you are within stumbling home drunk distance, the place will either be expensive or old. Burnham is pretty nice, is ridiculously close, and is almost criminally expensive.

Poolside is close, cheap, and not an undergrad spot. I'm sure there are a few other similar type of places you can find, quality, price, and location wise, but something has to give one way or another. If you need two or three parking spaces, you may want to move away a little bit. We do have a bus service that is free to students. Some spots have drop offs every 10-15 minutes.

Is there regular crime in Bloomington? I mean students getting mugged, etc. Basically, is it safe to walk alone at night?

No, no crime that I've heard of that wasn't committed by the law students  I haven't heard of anyone getting mugged, getting their car broken into, etc. I've walked downtown a number of times through the campus or the residential area a number of times, drunk or sober, and have not had any issue. We have more homeless people than I imagined (imagination = zero homeless) but I've never once felt unsafe in town or at my apartment. It's really a nice, calm little town.

Really? Thanks for destroying my "no crime" post  They break into your car? I leave my car on the street or in lots all the time, even late into the night and haven't had an issue.

OCPD had a trip with a bunch of alums and job fair type of things in DC over spring break. I think they do it every year, or at least that have done it the past few years.

Bloomington is easily the safest place I've ever lived, and that includes 2 other big ten towns. I've never even heard of anything in terms of violent crime. There is some property crime, but even most of that is petty college type stuff.

Someone sprayed some graffiti on my apartment building, but that's as bad as I've seen it.

As far as summer jobs go, as long as you're not picky about where you work or what kind of work, the school will help you find a job if the worse comes to worst.

Well I did leave my car unlocked, so I was kind of asking for it. It was a pretty crappy cd player anyways.

I went to an IU law event in Chicago and one of the 1Ls I met just got back from trip, but I heard some more about the various job fair trips (one to Louisville, maybe one to NY, can't remember) at law day.

Alright, cool. I went to undergrad in an urban area that had at least 1 student mugging per week, so the occasionally car stereo burglary doesn't sound too bad haha.

Okay, cool, thanks for the help. I get the impression that the OCPD actually isn't that bad. All of the 1Ls I talked to mentioned that they had some kind of summer gig lined up (which is better than some of the lower tier 1 and tier 2 schools I visited, where it seemed no one could find a summer job, paid or unpaid.)

Ditto, plenty of stabbings and armed robbery at my undergrad, even a carjacking in the student parking decks. There's really nothing, except kings stereo. I would say his red Ferrari is a little ostentatious for Bloomington, but to each his own

Yeah that CA personalized license plate that says BIG BUX is just too much.

lol

Seriously though I have this absurd skill of finding issues in exams with like 30 seconds left, and having to write incoherent outline of everything to gain some chance at points.

My word counts have gone up this semester but it feels like my grades will not haha.

Regardless, me and spoon at least are done with 1L year!!!

Goodluck for those of you in stake now, and Williams tonight

Woot! Feels refreshing!

And man, 30 seconds? I blew through that test so quickly I was sure I was missing something. Then other people started leaving... so I didn't feel as bad. Test wasn't all bad, but who cares? It's OVER!

So Kings, is this the end of your IU career?
