Got some news: I've received word that there isn't any current discussion about making LRW graded this year. Take that for what you will, but I'm going to breathe a little easier.ChewbaccaDefense wrote:I have several emails in; I'll report back when I have something.

Oh yeah, I heard good things about Parrish. Which is probably why another school offered him tenure.Bankhead wrote:My teacher was actually very helpful in terms of written feedback and was always available for help during office hours, etc. Too bad he left.Spoonmanners wrote:No way. They have been saying it for years, and it never happens.
The LRW teachers are also way too damn lazy to actually grade anything. The only thing that got an actual grade was the final memo and the final brief. You really have to twist their arm to get any sort of answer or writing help. No way they give themselves actual work to do.
I would highly recommend not spending ANYWHERE near the amount they try to make you spend on that class, at least during the hellish first semester.

Completely agree. LRW is the opiate of the masses. The design keeps people from achieving in their other classes. If you can find a way to "beat" LRW efficiently, that will help you achieve success in regards to GPA. The worst thing you can do is get bogged down in that class to the detriment of your others.
Do this by pulling all nighters near the due date. Don't start the assignment until 2 days before it is due. If you spend a week on the assignment, that is a week that you will have neglected your graded classes. For what? For the same "Pass" that appears on everyone's transcripts -- whether they spent 5 hours on the memo or 30 hours on the memo.

1000% agreed. Even I said I would spend most of my time dedicated to the graded classes, but somehow ended up spending more time in LRW than at least one 4 credit hour course. I wish I would have just pulled the all nighters. My severely negative opinion of LRW could be just my teacher, the loads of busy work, the lack of useful information learned, or the extreme work load for what should only be a two credit hour course. At the end of the day, I would trade that pass for a low-pass to increase any grade I got either semester.Bankhead wrote:^^

Well, I wouldn't want a "low pass". But those are so rarely given. You'd pretty much have to take a shit on the page.

I'd say that the difference between a B+ and an A- are greater than the difference between a P and a LP, which show up as Satisfactory on the final transcript anyways.
JE: I'm not going to lie, and I had no idea what the USAO was. I don't think I came across any job postings or anyone even mention going for a USAO position. I wonder if they even take 1L's. But no, I'm not aware of anyone who got or attempted to get that position. I think. I can probably tell you more in August

While I agree in concept, I will say that I considered LRW to be the most useful class in terms of actually holistically understanding how law is applied. If you get the IRAC concept down cold, you're halfway to a good law school exam grade. LRW is definitely the "glue" class, and I think its designed to be that way... I had of "epiphany" moments in LRW.Spoonmanners wrote:1000% agreed. I didn't spent much time on it and definitely pulled all nighters. But that approach isn't much different than how I approached my other classes.

Ehh... I would say that applying the skills you learn in LRW to law school exams hurts as many people as it helps. There are crossover elements, but if your exam prep consists of trying to apply LRW skills to your exams, you might be in some trouble. I actually do use a version of IRAC on most exams, but I wouldn't be caught dead using my exam style on LRW, or vice versa.danquayle wrote:While I agree in concept, I will say that I considered LRW to be the most useful class in terms of actually holistically understanding how law is applied. You should be exploring other avenues to learn how to write good law exams. Staying true to the IRAC model will screw you in a lot of classes. I know some people who got shit grades on exams, but a high pass in LRW
Though I realize you said "halfway".
And congrats on graduating, dan!

Re: Indiana University - Bloomington 1L's taking questions
Hey guys, I would like some advice. I posted this before but I'm still torn between attending IU-B and taking the year off. I would be leaving my gf, friends, and family who are all on the east coast. I ideally want to work in the NY/NJ BOS and maybe philly area but it doesn't seem that an IU-B degree will take me THAT far. I am URM and I was told that specific diversity programs may work in my favor. My goals are to work in a large firm for a while and then move to a midsized firm or go inhouse. Any advice? I have a 90k scholly and I don't know if I want to pass that up. I'm also on Cornell and Vandy waiting lists but I'm not banking on getting off them.

FWIW, I have a friend who managed to network his way into an appellate clerkship in Jersey over the summer. It would obviously take work, but it can be done.

Re: Indiana University - Bloomington 1L's taking questions
I have a question about getting out of town. Assuming I'd look to take a quick weekend "off," what are some good, cheap places to escape to from Bloomington? I don't have a car, so mass transit is a plus, but not a requisite.

Does anyone know the grade deadline? I know Steele basically admitted he wouldnt turn in our grades till then. Krishnan seems like the type to get it in early. Im worried it may still be another couple weeks, which really sucks.

onetimeonly: NY and Boston are a little out of the reach, but it can still be done. It would just take plenty of leg work on your part to get a job afterwards.
Chewbacca: There are a few casinos a few hours out. I'm sure there are plenty of small getaways, but there's not a whole lot of time to get to them. Chicago and Nashville are both 4 hours away, and are popular destinations.
Kings: I think it's 4 weeks after the last final, but that is actually coming up.

I thought it was four weeks from the date of EACH final (i.e. June 1 would be the deadline for the Con Law final on May 1). Though your interpretation has much higher formal realizability...Spoonmanners wrote:onetimeonly: NY and Boston are a little out of the reach, but it can still be done. Yeah, my contracts grade was the last one I got, over 6 weeks after when I took it. I believe at the time it was 4 weeks or 1 month after the end of finals week.Bankhead wrote: I thought it was four weeks from the date of EACH final (i.e. June 1 would be the deadline for the Con Law final on May 1). What is the curve at IUB? 3.0? 3.3?

bankhead: your formal realizability comment gave me flashback to the good old torts days
You guys are way more up to date on this stuff then me.
Technically each class is curved to between a 3.2 and a 3.3, but the median gpa is usually about a 3.3 or so.
