Same.... top 10% of the class and I cant even get the crim law journal? wtf

To be fair, making a journal has zero correlation with grades and 100% correlation with whether you actually cared enough to try hard on the editing portion. When grading journal tryouts, it's pretty clear who did and did not try to really dive into the Bluebook.

But the second round might still be going on, so you still may hear; I'm not quite sure how that works.

I think the writing portion is really only counted for VIJL and Law Review (though others can correct me if I'm wrong). I don't think any of the other journals have a note requirement, so they don't really even look at the writing portion.

Went through and deleted all my overly annoying whining. I guess they were just running behind their 5pm deadline. I just got a couple acceptances over email, my 1st, 2nd and 5th choice, so just know they are still coming through.

All law students lose their minds as 1Ls. Myself included.

Kind of tempted to tryout for a no cite checks position.

And what positions are these? Does it vary from journal to journal?

I assume it varies, but I know of at least 2 journals that have positions that have certain responsibilities that don't include cite checking. Pretty sure I cite check like shit, so it would probably be more beneficial to put me elsewhere. That will be my interview theme.

Hey guys, looking for some advice. I saw you guys talking about Journals. I applied for 1L editing board positions last week for VELJ. If I receive an offer for one, what is the take on whether it is worth it or not? Articles editor/production editor/Business manager... you know the usual.

Also, how does one become EIC, looks like the one on there right now is a 2L, how does that process work?

Doing managing board of a secondary journal is a sucker's bet, in my opinion. But if you can snag a position with less work than it would take to do cite checks, then sure.

Agreed, with one small caveat. Only two reasons to do MB. First is if it gets you out of cite checks. Even then, it might not be worth it depending on the amount of work that comes with the position. The second is that if you want to clerk and have the grades where it might be possible (hard to know at this point, but you probably want to be over the 3.48 top 25% cutoff at a minimum), then there might be some value in it. There's no good reason to think about EIC. It's a lot of work with no payoff.

Do any current students have T-mobile? I'm loving their new plan pricing, fairly worried about their coverage. If anyone knows anything about how their reception is in cville generally and around the laaw school in particular, I'd greatly appreciate some info.

What is your title of not on a managing board? Just "member" or something like that. Glad to hear its not a big benefit. Firms dont care?

Firms, like, powerfully don't care. Extra-strength don't care.

Titles are wonky. I think "editorial board" is what some journals call cite check monkeys, but some journals/school call their elected positions/officers editorial board instead of managing board?

Moral of the story is it doesn't matter and it's all a pointless pyramid scheme. The last time anybody read a law journal article voluntarily was like 1968.

The title doesn't even matter. I just have XYZ Journal listed on my resume under my GPA, that's it.
