Okay, I think I found a good deal on a place, but I'm still pretty unfamiliar with the rental market.

In your experience, is $415 per month (not including cable/utilities) for a room in a 2 bedroom, 1 bath apartment on Arlington considered cheap for a place that's really close to the LS (closer than Jeffersonian)? It's $830 per month for the whole apartment and I'd have to find a roommate.

What do you think? Is this something I should jump on or am I doing it wrong?

ETA: Sorry for asking so many questions. I get wound up by this stuff.

That's exactly how much I pay to live in the Jeff (not including cable/electric) and I've been in here since I was a 1L (so the prices are now higher). I guarantee you won't find anything cheaper on Arlington.

Also, if you really want to hustle, if the apartment comes with a car space and you don't have a car, you can "sell" the space to someone at the law school (for less than the school charges for sucky D3 parking) and just register their car as yours on the form. My friend did this last year.

Sure. bear in mind that, as a result, lots of these places will be very busy given it's the weekend. I'd recommend making a reservation sooner over later.

I'm sure you'll find reviews of some/all of these places online. If not folk here have probably eaten at most of them.

It's possible some people place differing values upon the word 'near'. From another perspective, everything in Charlottesville is near UVA. It's a fairly small town.

But it takes 3 hours to drive across town because traffic blows.

Something I can't figure out - is it still the case that completed course reviews show up before you get your grade?

No, they go up the day after (usually) the grade is posted in SIS.

The Local has a New York strip with gorgonzola sauce that's incredible.

A friend of mine was talking to a prof who mentioned that there's an understanding among the professors that they shouldn't release too early. The earliest profs to release might have students come in and talk to them about their grade, while profs who release at around the deadline (together with all the other profs) don't face the same issue for whatever reason. I also occasionally wonder if profs mouth "gunner" at each other when they see another professor who released really early and screwed up student expectations for everyone else.

haha, I believe all of this

la michoacana (the merry maids building? yes, the merry maids building)
continental divide
beer run
the local
belmont bbq
if anyone tells you riverside, they mean martin's grill (they just may not know it yet)
the castle
wayside chicken
bellair
i like sticks; basically a mediterranean chipotle
you should probably try bodo's bagels. if not, bluegrass bakery
whiskey jar, c&o, mono loco, the nook, citizen burger

i'd keep going but i'm getting hungry. if you get a chance to explore outside the cville limits, blue mountain brewery. yes, for food

i don't drink coffee, girlfriend says: para, mudhouse, shenandoah joe's. so, you know, whatever

enjoy your visit!

So what is the typical social scene like? I'm honestly not looking to have too active of a nightlife, but I'm curious about what the norm is. Weekends? Usually houses/apartments? Bars? Which ones? Do people tend to split up into their own little clicks or do large groups of sections tend to go to the same place?

the castle

Where/what is the castle? Also, I don't disagree with most of those recommendations. (I removed the rest of the quote because man that thing was long.)

To the poster above me: I imagine everyone's social situation is a little bit different. However, I'd describe the ordinary social scene as a 1L as going to a pregame with your section (often combined with other sections) for a few hours and then going to "the corner" which is where the bars are located near the undergrad campus. People did occasionally go to further away bars such as the downtown mall ones but its rare. While at the bars your likely to see/talk to other random law students you or your section mates know and as the night progresses smaller groups will almost undoubtedly form.
I would say that as a 2L/3L your sections are more likely to break down. For me the majority of my social drinking interactions continue to be with people in my section but many people have their own groups at this point. I can't say if that is the norm or not but its also a conscious choice as to who you want to hang out with. Additionally, having a roommate probably makes it significantly more likely you will hang out with people from other sections more often.
