What's the deal with Civil Liberties? Why is there a Friday and a Saturday class requirement totaling 4 credit hours for a two credit class but it looks like they're 2 separate classes? So confused.

There are several classes that are offered in this format, generally in order to allow legal practitioners to teach courses on the side. The basic deal is that you have class one Friday afternoon/evening and then the next morning, more or less every other week. Each course is either on the "A" or "B" weekend schedule, and you can find the respective schedules on LawWeb. In the case of Civil Liberties, the class page on LawWeb states "NOTE: This B weekend course meets on September 1, 14, 15, 28, 29; October 12, 13, 26, 27; November 9, 10 and 16."

Hi. New here and apologize if this question has already been asnwered before. I saw there were so many pages in this topic that I honestly wouldn't have time to read them all.

If people don't mind sharing, however (even if again), what is the cost of living like for UVA law school? Thanks.

The financial aid budget is a little under $20K for the year once you pay the PLUS loan fees. Most single students agree that you can get by with a good bit less than that/have enough left over to cover the summer if you're willing to live with a roommate.

If you take a "short course" winter of your 1L year could you take one less class your 1L spring? (one less elective or something). I will be staying over the break, so I would consider this if it is possible. One less class 2nd semester would definitely help my progress in my other classes

1 credit of an A hopefully. Seems like a drag to me though.

There are also a few courses which are close to guaranteed B+s. Off the top of my head, Rhetoric with Sayler is straight B+ city - when I checked it was 14/15 B+, 1 A-; with the year before that something similar but with 2 A-. It means you have to eat a B+, but it also means that you get a free credit where you do very little work. I think some seminars are also incredibly B+ heavy, but those require actual work.

I wouldn't worry about it from a grades perspective unless you think you might be in the hunt to grade onto law review. (Of course, you have to make the decision of whether to take a J-term class long before you've taken any finals.) The break is really long. If you don't have something else going on, and if you find a subject that interests you, go for it. I've done J-term both years and am signed up for this year as well. The result: I have no finals and only one substantive paper this semester, and I'm in class less than 10 hours per week.

1L Spring I took a 3 credit lecture course and a 2-week long short course that was 2 credits. It was awesome (except during those two weeks and the paper writing afterward, which seriously interfered with feb club)

I will say that if you end up below median 1st semester, taking very few credits might not be the best idea, because even if you did well, it wouldn't raise your cumulative GPA very much. On the other hand, you would have less work, and might be able to devote more time to your classes, but I suspect that's not going to help all that much.

Yes, if you did poorly first semester, it's imperative you strategize to get that GPA back up. As 5ky says, it's about balance--if you think you can perform under a bigger credit load, the payoff is great.
