There obviously both really hard, but you don't have to face that condensed time commitment that the write on requires.
wtf?

1) The writing competition is in late February and/or early march
2) The way the 'note on' process works, you can do it any time you want to. That being said, the odds of a 1L coming up with a topic, writing a paper, getting it edited, submitting it, having it reviewed, and being selected for publication before February are close enough to 0 that I think it's fair to just call it impossible.
3) Keep in mind that people on law review have to write/submit a note, which means that the competition for being published already includes every member of law review.
WTF?

1. Thats even WORSE. That's actually while you are still studying for your 1L classes and exams. That's incredibly stressful and a huge extra burden. 2Ls and 3Ls told me that that's one of the main reasons why many people in the past didn't even attempt the write on comp.
2. That was my exact point. You aren't forced into doing it 1L year, you have more than a damn week to do it.
3. Never disagreed that it was tough, but the nature of the time frame makes it somewhat less stressful.
The problem with noting on is that you don't get a boost for OCI which is the main benefit of Law Review (aside from the pool table and free sodas). Having the writing competition during late February is far less stressful than having it after finals when you're burnt out from studying. In late February you aren't really focusing on finals given that school has only been in session for about a month.

As far as competition with people on Law Review for notes, it seems that there are a decent number of notes from people who aren't on Law Review. Everybody on Law Review doesn't always submit their note for publication, rather they just have to write a note. Some people assuredly mail it in on their note and don't really intend to have it published.

Wait! Law Review gets free soda?! Shit, that could save me a hell of a lot of money!

Love how this thread has turned into prospective students asking a UVA 1L questions to fellow 1Ls asking questions to one another.

Not that I mind--interesting to see what life on the North Grounds is like.

You get free entrance to all football games with your student ID. BUT, be careful. Once you leave the game you CANNOT get back into the same game using your ID. In other words, you can get in ONCE for EACH football game.

Why wouldn't you get an OCI boost for noting on? The website says that if your note is published, you get invited into the law review. And do they still get the free sodas and pool table access? lol Seriously, is there a difference of membership/perks if you get invited from noting on?

Not for OCI, no, but noting on to law review would certainly help one's clerkship search, right? Doesn't that take place during fall of 3L?

Sometimes, it's during 2L summer, at least for federal judges who don't use the standard clerking system (the name of the system escapes me right now). Not that that really makes a difference in terms of the answer to your question (unless you note on your 3L year, which I think is possible, although I'm not sure).

I don't mean to put a damper on everyone's LR aspirations, but the vast majority of UVA law students are not on LR, not because they don't want to be, but because they didn't grade on, write on, (or for a few of them) note on. Simply working hard is no guarantee you'll pull off the grades or journal tryout performance required for LR; there really isn't any guarantee in general. While obviously it's great for your career prospects to be on LR and it's something that's worth aspiring to, it's not the end of the world if you're not on LR* (and there's a decent to good chance you can get onto another journal).

Roughly speaking, an average of two people from each 1L section will grade on and another one person (or really a bit less) from each section will write on. Each section is around 30 people. They (your section) are usually bright people, and they usually work hard.

Will a few of you make it to LR? Yeah, probably. I guess all I'm trying to say is don't make LR a do-or-die goal (being a goal is fine), because I think some of you will then end up pretty unhappy.

Sorry for the preachiness, especially from a 1L.
YC is wise and speaks the truth (but I refuse to quote tiny text ;))

Here's what I know:

At least some short course grades have been posted and received, so the system isn't entirely fragged.

From here on out, they'll trickle onto SIS. As the email we got stated, often the course review will be posted under 'completed course reviews' just before grades come out. Currently no 1L courses have reviews up.

Last year, ~10/24 1L classes had grades posted by ~January 25th, and basically nobody had all of their grades. The bulk come in right around the deadline for submitting grades (February 1st).

Our Torts professor is infamous for being slow (but rumor hath it prioritizes 1L classes) , so I wouldn't expect that grade until mid-Feb :(

Man I hate that he is important to anybody besides people whose toilets are overflowing with shitwater.

Also, I think schools hold back the release of grades so students have to make tuition payment for the next semester first. Oh you failed every class and want to drop out? Thanks for the extra 20k, smell ya later. It's tricky, like deciding whether to cancel an LSAT score.

0L question here...

1- I understand Spring semester classes don't start until about mid-January. What are 1Ls (or most of you) doing now? Are you taking a break from studying?

2- Also, I believe there is a short 1-2 week class that takes place right before the regular Spring semester. What is advantage of taking these classes? Genuine interest in the subject matter? GPA boost?

Any sense of how well UVa places into NC (Charlotte/Raleigh) biglaw or what rank is necessary? I am assuming not a lot of people are necessarily trying for them, but is it still doable?

If you give me the $$$$$, you'll be :D
The only reason I'm working over the break is to keep my foot in the door to go back into engineering if and when the shit hits the fan and I end up in the bottom 20%.
