Is it doeable to live in C'ville and work in Richmond? How long is the drive? Google map says 1.5 hours, but my friend living in Richmond said 45 min... My SO has to find a job, and we think he might have a better luck in Richmond than C'ville.

Depends on how much he loves/hates driving. You can do Charlottesville to the west side of Richmond near I-64 in 45-50 minutes.

Thanks! Do you know if traffic is bad between these two places during rush hour?

While I take pretty much everything YCrev says as gospel, does anyone else have any input to add? In the same situation and just looking for anecdotal evidence whether it is practical or not.

Do you follow the speed limit? The limiting factor will be that rather than traffic. I will suggest that its not a 45-50 minute trip if you follow the speed limit.

I think I do 75 steady once I clear the immediate area around C'ville where I suspect speed traps might be. Nice relaxing trip imo.

Rising 2L here. I am living on the western outskirts of Richmond (Short Pump) next year and commuting to Charlottesville because my fiance goes to school half an hour in the other direction. It will be tough but doable--about 50 minutes each way. Hopefully I will be able only to have classes 3-4 days/week, plus I can crash with people in CVille if need be.

I also drove to downtown Richmond about once/week last year and never had any problems. There is basically never traffic in between the western end of Richmond and Charlottesville unless there is an accident or something. I-64 does get trafficky during rush hour once you get past the edges of Richmond, though.

PM me if you have any more questions, and good luck : )

I've heard VA is pretty tough on speeding; that's pretty harsh. I'm going to try to use the underlined to sell my fiancé on the commute being more about distance than traffic. I mean, I'd rather she find work in C'ville, but you take what you can get.

I ED'd in January and was in before the end of the month. I do not recommend you wait that long - but take it as proof that you shouldn't hyperventilate about not sending your application before November.

Also - is it entirely plausible to just walk to the school from the Grad Centre? My folks aren't convinced, but I'm refusing to throw down more than a hundred dollars for a permit to park somewhere when I can just walk there.

Grad Centre's website says it's 3 blocks from the law school. So I guess the answer to your question lies in the question, can you walk three blocks?

+1, although it's possible that URM applications are processed on a slightly different time line.

Hey for those of you guys that go to UVA, is there a connection between the law school and the JAG school next door. Can you take classes in the JAG school? Do you think the proximity would give a leg up in JAG recruiting?

You can indeed take classes in the JAG school. There are a limited number available for you to take, and they're just listed in the normal registration schedule when you register for classes. I don't know anyone that's actually done this, though, and their schedule seems out of sync (this past spring their classes started and ended a couple weeks earlier than the standard UVA Law classes).

I don't know if the proximity in itself would give you a leg up; however, if you're actually interested in JAG, taking actual JAG classes probably could. Also, going to a top school like UVA can definitely help, as well. At least one JAG branch is coming to OGI this August, and just word-of-mouth I've heard fairly good things about people who've tried to join from UVA.

You can't buy a parking permit as a 1L if you live anywhere on Arlington (including the grad centre). It takes roughly 7 minutes to get from the grad centre to the law school on foot, it's literally 2 blocks.
