So basically any place that is on the Corner is a college bar in Charlottesville. Bars on the Corner have University Ave. or Elliewood Ave. addresses for the most part so that will help you identify them. Most of the bars that would be automatically disqualified as college bars (i.e. bars on the Corner) are: Biltmore, Trinity, Virginian, Boylan Heights, and Eddy's Tavern. Also, Biltmore is the bar that is by far most popular with law students, law students seem to basically always go to Bilt or end up at Bilt for part of the night.

The nicer bars are Downtown (mostly E. Main St. addresses) and you don't find very many college kids there, these bars include: Whiskey Jar, Skybar, Rapture, and Miller's. I'm definitely missing a few but that's a good place to start. Also, there are bars that are not Downtown or on the Corner, these also cater to non-college students so you should be good there as well. Also, I've only named places that are bars, there are a million restaurants in Charlottesville that all have huge bars so that's worth looking into as well. A lot of the good restaurants are Downtown or a neighborhood called Belmont. Also, Charlottesville has A LOT of breweries and vineyards, so that's another route to look at. Basically, if you're looking to pour drinks in Charlottesville, there's no shortage of options.

Zocalo and Blue Light too. Rapture would be a fun place that doesn't get a ton of play with law students.

Yeah.

SIS --> Academics Box under Student Center on SIS Home Page --> Dropdown list --> select "Grades" --> pick the right semester.

SRO (or whoever it is) uploads grades once a day at 7:00 PM, so it's not worth refreshing more than once a day at like 7:15

you'll also usually get an email about it. unless you have some exceptionally quick graders (Nelson had his CivPro grades out by the 4th-5th last year I think), you'll probably get the bulk of them on the 18th-20th.

Does anyone know the grade deadline this semester?

Does anyone have information on how scholarship offers differ for in-state students? Specifically, what sort of numbers are competitive for a full ride?

It seems like the standards are slighlty different but it's hard to determine by how much just using LSN, etc.

Has any one ever had any trouble getting in to Ivy Gardens? When does the Pavilion start to fill? And is hope real for getting off the Jeffersonian waitlist? Is that a thing that happens?

Pavilion is running yet another gimmick promotion this week trying to get its residents to renew, and they opened up renewals in October, so my guess is that they are not close to filling up. Ivy has been slower to fill this year because of the Pavilion expansion, but you're more likely to get a preferable apartment if you sign up earlier.

So I'm sitting here with no grades... Anybody else?

No grades yet. You can see which professors have turned in grades by going to the completed evaluations on law web and seeing who has evals up. It seems like even professors who have turned in are doing so for 1L classes before their other classes. That's fine. It will be within a week or so.

Thanks for your advice on housing, everyone! Does any one know how utility bills and total cost compare between Ivy Gardens and Pavilion? It seems like everyone who lives at Pavilion wants to say that the included internet, water, sewer, cable and furniture make the difference in price between the two seriously less substantial, and that Pavilion is way more energy inefficient, but I think a lot of 0Ls would like to have an idea of actual numbers! Thanks!

If you can get Ivy, jump on it. Pavilion isn't worth it. They charge like double market value -- marginally better energy efficiency won't make up for that. Most people I know who lived in Pavilion during 1L have bailed for more reasonably priced housing in Jeffersonian, across the street in the 2400 buildings, and other random places.

Also, and I don't know why this isn't mentioned more in 0L discussions about this, but the Pav fire alarm goes off all. the. time. It went off at 3AM the night before our first memo was due this year.

complexes like pavilion are flame. grandmarc was the same way off the corner and there's probably an example or four in your old college town, too. tear down some old stuff in a decent location, throw up a good looking website with all the floor plans uploaded and a nice list of community amenities, make it really easy to lease from afar.... then build it with SPS construction quality and charge 30% more per sqft than anyone else does.

living there won't be the worst thing you could do, but there's no real reason to do it other than the information asymmetry for those that can't look at other options in person

the best deals on a place to live for law students are across the street from the Pavillion, but you mostly gotta get them through craigslist so people don't bother.

yeah they're a bit up from the pavilion, but i couldn't be bothered with the hassle. the arlington boulevard townhomes across from the pavilion (woodard properties) are pretty good. they're on the older side, but it was so great having a townhouse with a little backyard to grill, etc. in for only ~550/600 a person.

I live in one of those places across the street from Pavilion if a megapoaster wants it this August after I graduate. It's beautiful and my roommate and I loved it. Lived there all three years. Like most places there's no on-site washer/dryer, but it's $870 a month (so $435 split across two roommates) and a 4 minute walk from the LS.

I live in the townhomes across from the pavilion. yes to being older. but decent size and also washer and dryer. and for those with animals, the back yard is the best in the winter

Anyone have any experience with Barracks West?

I know Ivy and Pavilion are already filling up for leases starting in the summer, but is that typical of other apartment complexes in the area? Seems like most of the listings on the C-ville Craigslist are looking for tenants to move in immediately.

Plenty of places to live. I don't know if the Ivy ever fills up anymore.

My 1L fall GPA is right at 3.00. It is not distributed evenly so it's not straight B's but rather there's a C on there that drags the GPA down. I didn't even know it was possible to get a C in a 1L class, which leads me to believe I literally was the worst grade in that class. I'm feeling pretty awful right now about my grades and law school in general. Theoretically, I know if I get straight A's next semester I can pull up my GPA to a 3.50, but what are the odds after this horrible semester. I wouldn't be feeling so bad if that C literally didn't just knock the wind out of me. I'm aiming for some sort of respectable employment after law school, preferably biglaw as most people are.

Realistically, what do I need to pull my GPA up to after next semester to give myself a fighting chance at OGI? I know that all hope is not lost, it just seems like a really uphill battle at this point though especially with a C on my transcript.

EDIT: Also, does anyone know where this would rank me in the class at this point? I'm assuming it's all guess work but I was just curious if anyone had any data on just exactly how badly I'm doing percentile wise at this point.

3.0 is probably going to be bottom 10%. You can get jobs below median, but you'd really probably want to be around a 3.3+ if at all possible, which means getting close to a 3.7, or A- average for all of your classes.

I would prioritize meeting with all of your professors from last year to go over your exams and see what you did wrong and how you can improve.
