Not married, but 28 and very financially independent for 6 years also, and I had to jump through the same hoops. It is a little ridiculous, but oh well, if going to UVA Law were easy everyone would be doing it.
Looks like they changed the age limit (for parental financial disclosure) down to 26 years old.

"Please note that admitted students age 26 and under must submit parental financial information on the Law School Financial Aid Application to be considered for scholarship aid."

Screwed just the same! :|

Thanks for pointing that out! When I read it the other day, the age limit was still 28. This is going to make things a little simpler. Sorry it doesn't help you out though.

On another note, does anyone have experience living in C'ville with pets? I'm curious to know how far from the law school I might have to live in order to have a fenced yard. I've had my own home for the last three years and I'm a little worried about finding a place to rent with two dogs and two cats. I checked the classifieds, but (and I'm not surprised given the time of year), there doesn't seem to be too much available.

So I filled out the FAFSA a few weeks ago and I submitted UVA's finaid application just a second ago.

Does this mean I'll get my aid package (merit and need-based) as soon as they start sending them out?

Likely, but that still won't be until mid/late March.

is Ivy Gardens as bad as it sounds on some apartment ratings and reviews sites? I was thinking of putting down a deposit for a one BR but I won't be able to check it out until ASW in March- risky? Where are some other places to check out? I will have a car.

More like to brawl with the students at Darden.

Med students will actually be contributing something to the world.

some will contribute something . . . I'm not sure if the world really needs more dermatologists or plastic surgeons doing cosmetic work

does UVa have a decent pool for lap swimming? Is it for regular students only or is it shared with water polo/swim team?

There's an aquatic fitness center which has a pool. I believe regular students have access to it when that gym is open and there isn't an event scheduled. You can read about it here:

http://www.virginia.edu/ims/aquatics/afc_pool.php

I believe these are the hours for that pool (with the stipulation that it can be closed for events):

hopefulundergrad wrote:How expensive is it to live in Charlottesville, not including rent?

Sample budget per month:
Utilities?
Groceries?
Going out to eat (by this I mean grabbing breakfast/lunch on campus when you forgot to bring something)?
Entertainment (clubs/bars, restaurants, etc.)?
Miscellaneous?
Utilities- depends on where you live, some places include all utilities in your rent, some places only charge you for water, etc. I live at a somewhat nice apartment complex and I pay ~40 for water and 60-140 for electricity depending on the season.

Groceries- somewhat depends on where you shop, but this shouldn't be any different than where you currently live. You can save ~20% shopping at Kroger as opposed to Harris Teeter, the "high-end" grocery store near the school.

Food at school- they sell subs and sandwiches for $5 and a variety of other foods for about the same. The cafeteria "meals" are usually terrible. Prices are not cheap but not ridic either.

Entertainment- not sure if there are any "clubs" here, it's mostly bars/restaurants with a dance floor. Restaurants range from $7-8 a person all the way up to $50-60 a person. One thing we definitely don't lack here is a nice selection of restaurants.

I went over, but I was also rather reckless with my spending and had a savings cushion I could eat into if I did. Now I've eaten up that cushion and I'm having to actually budget this semester.

It actually starts tonight! Although from my understanding, the parties from Sunday through Wednesday are more for 2Ls and 3Ls, since 1Ls have more to deal with than. I will hopefully attend most of the Thursday, Friday, and Saturday parties this month.

~14k. Chipotle every day adds up.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
