I was gonna say something about a certain type of berry but I should refrain.

I know the economy is in shambles, but any idea of what it takes/if it is possible to get a high paying 1L summer internship?

How scared are Cornell 3Ls about job prospects?

How scared are you--and other 1Ls?

high-paying 1L gig: not likley
paying 1L: likely if you have local connections to a smaller market.

I don't really know about whether or not clerkships are more competitive. As 1Ls I dont know that we really think about it yet.

I havent heard of any 3Ls freaking out about not having jobs-- but I'm not friends with very many of them either.

For us, I personally am not worried. I dont want to do BigLaw and I also think that by the time we graduate the economy willl have turned around, so it wont be an issue.

For a 1L high paying gig-- from what I have seen it just matters what market you are trying to get into and if you have any connections.

I have a friend making market in Houston for 1L summer-- but they only hire 1Ls for half the summer. It really depends on your connections I think.

I'll be staying here in Ithaca by choice this summer doing non-profit work most likely. I've heard upper classmen encourage 1Ls to not try to get firms jobs just because it's nice to have another experience before you work for a firm for the next however many years of your life.

That sounds like sage advice.

I was under the impression that paying 'biglaw' 1L gigs were hard to land in a good economy, even from a top school.

Some random questions:
  • How are the gyms? Or maybe a better question: will I get fat during LS?
  • Who are the remarkable profs that I might have my first year? I just received the Cornell binder yesterday and would like to read their bios.
  • How excellent is the Ithaca Farmers' Market? I enjoy cooking, so a good farmers' market would be a big plus.

Answers:
1) I'm the laziest guy you'll meet. I went to the gym once or twice since I've been here. I've probably put on a little less than ten pounds, but I've weighed more in my life. Other folks are perfectly responsible about taking care of themselves, though i've heard complaints (especially about noyes, which is closest to the law school) that things can get packed. There's always the squash court though, where it isn't too hard to get a time, right in the building.
2) Remarkable profs: all of them. J/K. As a first year, you will have Hillman, who is one of my favorite professors ever. You might have Michael Dorf (rumor has it that he's going to teach a consitutional law section next year), which would be awesome. You'll have Kevin Clermont, for at least one semester, and despite his legendarily difficult exams, he's a good teacher. Steve Shiffrin is a bid deal in first amendment stuff, and Jeff Rachlinski is a big deal in the empirical legal studies field, and a riot in class.
3) The Farmer's Market is pretty good. I've only been twice, but both times were enjoyable, both for the fresh produce and the random stuff you'll see only in Ithaca. I took my parents there when they came to visit, though, and they (being super conservative folks, who are convinced they've never met a gay person in their life) were a bit taken aback.

Hillman is awesome... and we have a visiting professor this semester for Spring's Contracts who I hope is going to be a permanent fixture here, so maybe future 1L's will all be excited about one Professor Hoffman...

Got a few questions as I prematurely mull over my school options (with 6 apps still out to pasture who knows what kind of choice I will face) so thanks in advance for any answers

1.) Are there any good neighborhoods between Ithaca College and Cornell? (i.e. pretty walkable from both)
2.) do you recommend living with other law students or with someone who wont get into the whole finals stress madness..?

i guess something like that. i studied chinese for four years and studied in china a couple of times... seems a shame to let it go down the tube. i feel like spanish would be easier to maintain so i'm interested in that, too...

What a coincidence.
I did 3 years of chinese, some in china, and spanish, both of which I want to keep up / improve..

Cornell also has some tempting looking study abroad options for chinese that I definitely are points in cornell's favor in my book

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
