Panda - Nice answer. . . but -8??? You know we don't use Celsius here. Yeah, it was cold yesterday. 4 degrees F in the morning. "Warmed up" to around 24 in the p.m. Have been kicking myself for not going to Duke all week. Seriously, though we do have a number from TX and other warm climes. Most of the time you will be inside anyway. They keep the library nice and warm.

Where in the library do you study? I find the reading room rather chilly a lot of the time, which is okay because it keeps me from dozing off, but I certainly wouldn't categorize it as "nice and warm."

We generally camp out on the first floor, in the row of cubbies along the windows into the atrium. If you get there early enough, you can usually score one.

K sometimes abandons us for the sea of cubbies on the second floor (although not so much anymore, as the school does seem to keep the first floor toasty, and he has that thing about cold weather .)

Sorry if this has been answered before, but I couldn't bear to go back all the way to 2008 and find out: What are school year/part time job prospects like for 2L and 3L? I'd like to be able to take some of the sting off the loan bills that will be piling up. Local economy jobs? Research assistant jobs? Library? Mopping the floors? Anything available?

For us SoCal/warm climate people...anywhere to buy warm clothes up there? I just don't think that what they sell down here is going to keep me warm. It is going to be 75 F here today. Life is rough.

It was suggested to me by the financial aid director that if I wanted to work as a 2/3L, that I shouldn't have much of a problem picking up a TA position in an UG department related to my MA/PhD - I would suspect the same for anyone who has post-UG grad work. However, you might also want to consider doing an externship - you get the credit, but the tuition for those credits is quite reduced.

As far as clothing - there are a few adequate places in Ithaca (typical small mall fare (Gap, etc.) and REI for more serious outwear.) If you have a car, the Waterloo Outlets have a much larger selection, at deeper discounts. If you need high fashion, the Campus-to-Campus bus runs back and forth to Manhattan a couple times a day.

Thanks for the info. I'm not looking for high fashion, but I don't think my t-shirts, shorts and sandals are going to be adequate for NY winters.

There are no REI stores in the state of NY. There is, however, a small EMS store in Ithaca where you can buy decent down, etc. Students get 10% off most stuff there. If you're looking for cold weather outerwear, though, you might find a better deal this time of year by browsing mountaingear.com, altrec.com, or backcountry.com.

I'm trying to get back in the school mindset before next year, but I must admit the prospect of a 4 hour exam with nothing but my overworked brain to guide me is intimidating.

Question two, anyone know if student health insurance covers prescription medications? I emailed the health services office, but no replies yet.

I know Johnson has closed book exams. I think maybe Hillman, as well. Other ppl can give you specifics on who does, but don't worry about. Closed book exams tend to not be as detail specific as open book exams.

As for Rx, the SHIP will cover them. There is a small copay.

the closed book exams i had for first sem were Johnson for Con Law and Heise for Torts. I also know that for Civ Pro, Rossi only allowed the rulebook, and Contracts with Summers was completely closed book. Hillman was completely open book (you could even bring in a hornbook)
the exams that were closed book were more about application of rules and tests, and not really listing cases to back up your points. when the exams were open book, it was usually because there was multiple choice that was detailed, and the profs really wanted students to use specific cases to back their arguments up.

I don't think this is quite accurate. I've paid as low as $5 for some Rx, as much as $25 for others (which weren't name brand), and as we already established, panda didn't get her inhaler covered at all. Very few ins. policies cover ALL Rxs, anyway. It's be nice to get a list, but I'm guessing it changes yearly anyway.

Well I finally got an answer back to my email so in case any one else is still wondering- you only have to pay a copay of either $10 or $25- but coverage is limited to $2,000 (after copays) each year. So if you require an expensive prescription get ready to increase those loans (gradplus covers any medical expenses). Also, all doctor appointments have to be made initially through Gannett and the doctors there will decide if they can treat you or if you should be referred to some other specialist. I was told you cannot choose a doctor outside of Gannett before this happens (although maybe it varies depending on what medical attention you need).

So if you have to deal with any expensive medical issues, the advice is to make an appointment at Gannett as early as possible, read the SHIP plan carefully, and get ready to cough up some more money. Still, they won't deny you for pre-existing conditions and all emergency medicine seems to be covered so no worries if you trip and fall in a gorge on your way to class.

Oh, health care.

You have to go through Gannett the same way most HMOs require you to go through your "primary care provider," but the insurance still covers emergency care and urgent care while you're away from Ithaca.

ETA: oh, and the pre-existing condition thing is New York Insurance regulation and not special for the Cornell insurance.
