In-house counsel taking questions
Hi! I graduated from a Top 50ish school about 5-6 years ago. Currently in house at a smallish company (250-300 employees). Made the move from state-level government job about a year ago. I used to hang out on this website when I was first applying to law school - figured I’d pop in to see if I could help anyone out with advice. Ask me anything! (My answers might be vague to protect my identity and more importantly my corporate client!)

Thank you for coming back to take some questions! Was it ever your goal before/during/after law school to pursue an in house counsel position? I'm interested in pursuing that path and was curious how popular in house/business related work is for law school students compared to big law, IP, government, etc. and if there is a lot of competition for those positions.

Re: In-house counsel taking questions
It actually wasn’t part of my plan at all. I wasn’t even aiming for private sector work, and spent my first few years as a lawyer working for a state agency. The in-house opportunity arose because my current employer decided to hire in-house, and I happened to have lots of connections with the company. They actually reached out to me - it was essentially “hey you’re a lawyer and we like you - want to come work for us?”
So there really wasn’t much I did to prepare or plan to go in-house, other than fostering connections and keeping my options open. That’s probably not very inspiring or helpful!
