Wow...um...good luck making friends as a 1L. And before you fire back that the number of friends you have isn't included in the decision making process for law review or OCI or anything that "matters," you should realize that if you're a complete douche, no one is going to help you. Hell, you'd probably have trouble getting a letter of recommendation, because professors even despise people like you.

If you want to read during summer, here's my suggestion since you may have missed out on some of these in the past:

Making Friends
The Unwritten Rules of Friendship
Raising a Left-Brain Child in a Right-Brain World: Strategies for Helping Bright, Quirky, Socially Awkward Children to Thrive at Home and at School
Managing Difficult People: Proven Strategies to Deal with Awkwardness in Business Situations

Engineer, best TLS post I've seen in awhile. Thank you for that.

Cutiewiddlebebe, don't be ridiculous. You are going to school with fantastically intelligent people. There will be plenty who do no reading over the summer and land at the top of the class. GTM? Sure. LSC? Great. Your laundry list of unnecessary books? Terrible. Stop looking for the golden ticket and learn to network; it sounds like you could use some practice, and who you know (and get along with) is really just as important as how you do academically. Grades just get you the interview... personality is the key to landing the job.

10:1 this guy will be at or near the bottom of his class. Other 0Ls should be hoping to go to school with this guy. Seriously.
Not to be that guy... but well, i guess to be that guy. I think you mean something closer to 2:1 odds this guy will be at/near the bottom of the class. Since I know that is what you meant, I shall credit you sir.

From some dumbass poker pott odds website. But it was the first thing that came up. And for the record, I am quite weary of getting pwned by betasteve as he shellacked me in a PJ dispute with a 0L in another thread. So take this!!

The quickest and best way to do this is to say 'How many times will the percentage divide into 100'. 40% will divide into 100 2.5 times so the odds are 2.5:1.

This works for ALL precentages, a harder example would be say 37%, which will divide into 100 2.702702 times. Obviously this is not practical to do in ur head so if u remember that 33% goes in 3 times, u can see that anything slightly above this will make odds slightly below 3:1. To be honest, could u calculate a 37% odd while sat in a game? Probably not, as long as u know a rough percentage, u can divide it into 100 and get ur odds.

Further examples:
10% - 10:1
20% - 5:1
50% - 2:1
90% - 1.1:1

I still can't find the consensus on the best supplement for Property. Any guidance?

Understanding is good, if almost too in depth. Similar to the Dressler for CrimLaw.

If you are using the Dukeminier casebook, the Emanuel that's keyed to it is excellent.

The E&E is pretty average.

It's interesting to come back and read these threads after 1L year. I was one of those "what can studying hurt?" people, and I bought a bunch of E&Es, etc to read before school. I'd been out of college a few years, thought reading might be useful to get my brain back in student mode.

I made it through approximately 1 chapter of the Civ Pro E&E before I went, "F this noise" and spent the summer hanging out with my daughter and husband (before he deployed). I'm REALLY glad I decided to do that. First, because I don't think I would've retained anything that I read, and second, because my professors almost uniformly wanted different things than were focused on in the supplements. I actually ended up buying a different supplement for two of my classes because the one I'd originally gotten wasn't helpful given my professor's focus.

I'm now firmly in the "for the love of god, wait until you get to school" bandwagon. Meet your professors and get a sense of how they're going to teach the class -- if they're extremely methodical and focus each class on teaching you the BLL, you probably won't need a supplement (that was my contracts professor) but might want to focus instead on doing a ton of practice exams for practice issue spotting. If they're wacky and policy oriented (like my torts, and later my property prof) then you will likely need the supplement to teach you the BLL you aren't getting in class. If they've written a hornbook in the subject, buy that one (my civ pro professor -- I parrotted back nuances he mentioned in his hornbook, and he decided I was a genius. Not at all warranted, but I'll take what I can get). I ended up with a 3.89 for first semester...grades aren't back for second semester, but I followed the same strategy.

MOST importantly, I'd go to the library and take a look at the supplements before you buy any of them. For second semester, I went to the library and read the relevant sections of various supplements for my classes, trying to decide which one I liked best. After about a week, I had a good grasp of which ones were going to be most helpful for my classes, and those are the ones I bought. I know a lot of people swear by the E&Es, but I didn't find them all that helpful except in Civ Pro. YMMV. I thought the Understanding series was the best...I used them for Contracts, Property, Crim, Torts and Civ Pro. I used the Chemirensky hornbook for Conlaw I (my professor worships the man).

Good luck to everyone starting school this fall! DON'T waste your summer. Seriously. If you care enough to troll this forum, you care enough to put the work in to do well. :)
