aside from patent attorneys, who makes $ in IP?

Post by 180orRetake » Mon Aug 10, 2015 9:53 pm

what are some very well paying jobs for attorneys within the IP field, who do not have any desire to become a patent attorney (and pursue the necessary technical/scientific education)?

what's my path to becoming VP of IP at a big corporation? how about the trademark/branding side of things?

Retake undergrad. You're not going to be successful at managing IP unless you understand the technology.

lol. the IP field is extremely broad. a technological background is only necessary for patent attorneys/agents.

I'm going the patent attorney route, so take this with a grain of salt, but wouldn't the most feasible route to in-house copyright/trademark work be to start with a firm doing IP litigation work, and then being hired by one of your clients?

That sounds right. By the way, the overwhelming majority of "IP litigation work" is patent litigation work. If you want trademark and/or copyright, you better specifically target firms that have insular and active copyright/trademark groups. Or, alternatively, find a job with a boutique that specializes in copyright, trademark, or both. But there aren't many of those jobs around.

Also, I've noticed that a lot of in-house IP folks have done soft IP and patent stuff at firms before moving in-house. If your long-term goal is to go in-house as an IP lawyer, I'm not sure you're doing yourself any favors by steering clear of patent work.

What about media/entertainment companies for copyright/trademark? Or are you just looking for tech companies? I'm sure the M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E empire has room to add more IP lawyers.

Plenty of law firms have IP/technology transactional practices

Given the state of IP and the overall legal job market, it's unlikely you'll be able to break into IP without a tech background. Not saying it's impossible, but if I were you I would try selling myself as a general litigator, rather than an IP specialist.
