Re: Laptop
Cheap is obviously relative. The point is he shouldn't be spending over that. There are a couple of suitable laptops around $500 on the site I linked to. Clearly to some extent, it depends on a person's own wants and means.Mack.Hambleton wrote:is 1k cheap nowSerett wrote:Small, fast, and cheap. Find an ultrabook for $1k or less. Something like this is what you should keep an eye out for.

Re: Laptop
I'm still waiting for more info on the new Skylake processors and an official release date. Might be worth waiting for though--better power efficiency, onboard graphics, and wireless charging.
Also I agree with Mack, even if you're trying to future proof, 16GB is overkill. I think even with 4 you should be fine the next three years unless you want to game, video edit, or do some other graphically intensive process. But even then I feel like GPU would be a bigger issue than RAM, especially with laptops. No point in having 16gb RAM and no GPU.

For race horse exams, the key isn't to type quickly, the key is to type constantly. I'd rather be the guy that types 60wpm, has his outline memorized, and never stops typing, than be the guy who types 100wpm, but spends half of the exam puzzling over a commercial outline that he doesn't know very well.Barbaroix2 wrote:On a somewhat related note, I sometimes read on here that exams can be a bit of a time test.
Do you need to be able to type very quickly to do well, or is an average typist OK? I'm also looking at getting a new laptop, and I am just wondering if I should prioritize models with full-sized keyboards to maximize my typing speed.

Re: Laptop
I was in this same position a year ago. Was contemplating whether I needed to drop $800 on a new computer for law school. Basically, if you have a computer that doesn't turn off at random times over a 4 hour period you are fine. No need for a new laptop otherwise. If someone has a huge screen open and typing every word the professor says, stay far away.

Any thoughts on whether the Macbook Air 13" v. the new retina 12" Macbook is better for law students?

They're both macbooks lol they're fine. I'd either get Air on sale for when they go for 750 or if you're shelling out get the MBP retina which is the same price as the new MacBookalbpert wrote:Any thoughts on whether the Macbook Air 13" v. the new retina 12" Macbook is better for law students?

Re: Laptop
I personally hated the keyboard on the new Macbook - it's not like the Air or Pro keyboard at all. Go check it out in a store first.albpert wrote:Any thoughts on whether the Macbook Air 13" v. the new retina 12" Macbook is better for law students?
