Re: Do not pay 300k to have my life
Who stays in biglaw for 10 years..?
Also, lol @ 60 hours/week. NYC transactional here. I purposefully don't do the math because I don't want to know. But I've been at work until 12am, 1am, or 2am every night this week. Just had a 4 hour call this morning. I have another call this evening and some work to do after that. Oh, and I billed 10 hours last weekend also. My experience isn't atypical for when things get busy.

Seems like an appropriate place to put this anecdote:
/gets out of car at home after work
/does not see sister sitting in nearby car
/apparently makes forlorn-looking face
/sister says "What was that look on your face? You look so defeated."
/cringes inside
Make of that what you will.

Is the takeaway here that you live with your sister? Is this like the Paulie/Adrian situation in Rocky I?prezidentv8 wrote:Seems like an appropriate place to put this anecdote:

Re: Do not pay 300k to have my life
Well if you work in biglaw when would you ever be home and want to break the rules? Never would really come up. You'd be coming home and passing out or coming home and working.
I would take living at home right now. It gives you a little refuge.

What kind of family would make rules for their 28 year old son.JohannDeMann wrote:Well if you work in biglaw when would you ever be home and want to break the rules? Never would really come up. You'd be coming home and passing out or coming home and working.

I would move my whole family into my parents' house if I could. In a millisecond. I am a millennial so obviously I embrace our post-shame society.

1) determine what you both love doing and are good at doing(or as close apto a compromise of these as possible)loomy78 wrote:what should i do with my life?
25 yrs. net worth 60k. lib arts UG 4.0 GPA. masters in something like "environmental policy". no work experience besides internships.
2) do whatever it takes to get useful experience in that
Because so far, you've rolled the dice on higher education twice(once for college, once for grad school) and missed both times. Going for a third spin at the higher education wheel(whether it's law school, another grad school, etc) seems like a poor choice.
To this point, what have you done to try getting useful experience?

Re: Do not pay 300k to have my life
DF: 165k at NU, or 50k at UChi? Short term career goals are biglaw for 2 years. Long-term is lawyer in politics and maybe academia if I win law school. I have sufficient connections in the arcane political areas where I hope to eventually practice that make the prestige difference between UChi and NU probably a moot point (small political firms that specialize in 1st/5th/14th amendment stuff, which care far less about prestige than demonstrated interest and connections, which I have throughout undergrad and 3 years post-grad) . I'm 95% committed to NU, but think I would regret not going to UChi when I'm 50, when the $115k difference would be probably negligible. I conservatively average my salary over my 45 year career at $100k/yr, which is $4.5 mil pre-tax. So that makes the $115k tuition difference seem especially negligible. Also, my S/O will have a PhD and make six figs until she retires. Also, I should have sufficient connections to get an interesting job (paying 80k/yr + annual bonuses) if I am below median after law school graduation. I sound like I'm ahead of myself in terms of estimating my career chances but don't have the time or energy to justify my confidence in this post.

You also have to look at what the difference gets you. Probably nothing in this case.
