Emails after Acceptance

I've been receiving emails from students and alumni from schools I've been accepted to. I was wondering, what is the mechanism for this? Do schools send my information to any student/alumni who have similar background? I got emails from people who are in the same city and people who attended my UG. Or do schools send the information to people who sign up for some kind of ambassador program? Also, I was wondering how much information is released to these people. Is there a way to prevent this from happening once I get into other schools?

At my school, it was both - students signed up to be e-mailers, and the adcomms tried to connect people with common backgrounds/interests. It's supposed to be a helpful thing because you can ask questions of people who actually know what that school is like. I can't remember how much info we got about people we emailed - certainly name, where you lived/were from, undergrad, identified legal interests. Nothing more detailed than that. Not all schools do this, but you could always call up adcomms and tell them you don't want contact from any students/alums.
