people who considered both: BizS or LS?

Postby staples88 » Wed Nov 27, 2013 12:37 pm

HBS's median salary is 120K+20K signing bonus
HLS is 160K.

the top 10% of HBS probably makes a lot more in compensation, but magna @ HLS can get SC clerkship and do whatever.

why do people still say HBS>HLS?

Because your opportunities after HLS are primarily in the legal field or working in a law firm which is a high priced services industry.

Exit opportunities for HBS are whatever industry you want + biz services like consulting / ibank etc.

Even if HLS's median salary is 160k 2-4 years after law school, I would be curious to see what it was 10 years out of law school. Most people only last in biglaw jobs for maybe up to 3-5 years. After that, they typically transition to good jobs, but jobs that don't pay as well as big law.

Also, when you're thinking about this problem, it would be much more useful to start from the premise that you will will not be top 10%, but rather that you will be median. That is, start thinking from a position of most likely outcomes, rather than a position of roughly 10% probability.

Same is true for Ibanking and consulting

Much higher earning potential from a top business school than a top law school.

HBS probably has better long term opportunities and HLS probably has the better ROI. Almost everyone going to HBS is already gainfully employed and many of them will go back to the job that they had before the MBA, just in a slightly better position. A big chunk of people going to HLS probably wouldn't have the same kinds of opportunities that they have coming out of HLS.
