I just found out that softest locks you out of all other computer applications. Would a professor allow me to take the exam on a chromebook and have my MacBook out so I can search my outlines should I need to consult them? Open book/note tests, obviously, but I'm trying to think of ways to not have my resources be on paper (i.e. not searchable and generally useless).

The point of SoftTest is to prevent you from using any other computer applications/functions during an exam.

If you're at a school that locks you out of all other computer applications, the whole point is that you can't electronically search your outlines (or anything else). The software doesn't have to lock you out of everything else; that's just one of the options (I took one class where our prof had the program set with no restrictions, because a bunch of the readings had been online and he didn't want us to have to print them out for the exam). Some schools (or profs) actually don't care, don't block other applications, and let you search anything. But if the school does care and does lock you out of other applications, no, you won't be able to have a second computer up to search your outlines (even if it's open book).

This is why checklists and tabbing/indexing your outline are so popular. (Or keeping your outlines short to begin with, I guess.)

I offered that scenario on all my open book open note 1L exams. I was laughed at.

Laws schools love their paper. I just had to print out all 68 pages of Shelby County v Holder because computers aren't allowed in class.
