The recurring "what should I wear to law school" thread
So I know everyone has seen these threads on here before but I have to ask again, what should I wear to my first day of law school, not law school in general, just the first day before I see how other students show up? I'm asking because this topic came up at work...I work at a law firm right now and one of the law clerks is a 3L at the same law school I'm about to attend.
When I asked him what he thought of Professor X who I will have for Civil Procedure, he said on the first day of class, one of his friends showed up in a hat, shorts, t-shirt that said "Corona" or something, and flip-flops and Professor X gave the student a condescending look for a second and then said "Oh, so that's how you dress for law school?"
I don't want to be the guy showing up in a tuxedo with a top hat but I also don't want to be the slacker stereotype. What's conservative enough without looking like a d-bag?

I would not worry about it. If you're going to worry about it, I would do smart casual. This is driving shoes/boat shoes, sport shirt/polo, and jeans/chinos.

Flip flops are an abomination before god, so I could see why that professor was offended.
Do professors really care what you wear? Are they going to be upset by my tattoos and piercings? I dress real nice.

Wear whatever the hell you want. You're the one paying to be there. It doesn't matter one damn bit what you wear to Civ Pro.
And flip-flops are the most amazingly awesome footwear when it's 103 out.

Seriously. What an ass. I'd have been inclined to tell him that I pay a lot of money so he can get paid six figs to write articles no one is going to read, so I'll wear whatever I damn well please.kalvano wrote:Wear whatever the hell you want. I'm the type who'd wear pajamas with ridiculous bunny slippers and then gun hard.

It really does not matter what the fuck a professor thinks about you. Law school grading is blind, and although professors might say they adjust grades based on participation and other bullshit I have never heard of this happening. Anecdotally, I went to probably 30% of classes in one course and received the second highest grade.bdm261 wrote:So I know everyone has seen these threads on here before but I have to ask again, what should I wear to my first day of law school, not law school in general, just the first day before I see how other students show up? Go thrift shopping and wear whatevers. As long as the sneaker heads be like, "Damn, he got the velcros," you'll be alright.

Why the hell do you care? Your grade depends on 1 final that is blind graded.

Re: The recurring "what should I wear to law school" thread
As everyone else said, it doesn't really matter. Personally, I don't like the idea of wearing a hat to class like your friend did, but everything else is fine. I've seen people dressed similarly in class and nobody cared.
If it's something that really worries you though, wear jeans and a polo - but you don't need anything more dressy than that.

At my school you can get a B+ bumped to an A- if the teacher really wants to...anticule wrote:Why the hell do you care? Your grade depends on 1 final that is blind graded.
