173 / 3.4 - How would you use ED?
I'll be graduating this semester with a GPA around 3.4 or a little higher and an LSAT of 173. I really want to work in NYC BigLaw and my dream school is Columbia, but NYU would be incredible to attend as well.
I know I'm borderline with my numbers so I'm planning on EDing to one of the New York schools.
My question is, would it be worth it to ED to Columbia and face a higher possibility of wasting my ED for the cycle, or should I take the "safer" route and use my ED to better my chances at getting into NYU?
What would you do if it were you?

I'd retake. I think a 173 with your GPA is going to be rough and I don't think EDing will help you that much. If you really want CLS or NYU, you should get your LSAT up a bit more.Kellanj wrote:I'll be graduating this semester with a GPA around 3.4 or a little higher and an LSAT of 173. Probably NYU.
How are your softs? WE? UG prestige? Major? Army?
Nothing crazy, mostly the usual pile of internships and a decent community service background. My major is International Relations and I've spent some time studying abroad in Austria, but other than a strong upward GPA trend, I don't think there's much else at this point.

Yeah, probably NYU. I'm not sure how the dates work out but if NYU defers you to RD, maybe at that point ED to Penn if that interests you. Safety net of sorts.
You should also think about applying widely to the t14 and hope for decent scholly at a lower t14 that can get you back to NYC anyways.

I think you are effectively a lock for NYU ED especially if apps continue their decline next year. I also think your chances of getting into NYU if you are willing to wait out a WL are very high.
So that being said, I would apply in September to NYU, ED Columbia, and if you are panicked by January, consider pulling the trigger on a Penn ED, but again you should be very optimistic about your NYU chances.
Applying broadly is good advice too. You will get WLed by UChi, but you could get off of that one and it gives you an equally good chance at NYC, and anywhere below the T6 (Minus UCB) is in play with small scholarship help.
