Searching for 1l summer opportunities as a 0l

Post by qwertyboard » Tue Apr 23, 2013 12:47 am

I'm trying to find Biglaw opportunities for the 1l summer and I feel a bit overwhelmed by the task. I have read a couple of times it's better to familiarize with the law firms I would like to work for before 1l begins.

How would you approach 0l summer employment search?

Is there any complete list of diversity 1l SA opportunities?

URM t14

Thanks!

Not really.

It's not a bad idea to refine your resume or even draft a basic cover letter... but you don't need to be doing anything substantive.

There's nothing wrong with trying to familiarize yourself with nalp and the big name law firms that work in the area you want to be after graduation. It can also be helpful to take a look at some sample cover letters and maybe write up a draft or two for different employers.

That said, none of this is searching for 1L summer opportunities as a 0L--it's just starting to familiarize yourself with the process. It seems pretty pointless for most people to try to hunt for a 1L summer job as a 0L.

If you have time, create a spreadsheet of employers you are interested in. Think about judges, non-profits, firms, in-house programs, etc. Draft cover letters for each employment type as well as a resume.

This way you won't have to do much more than tweak your materials at the end of the semester and can focus all your time on studying for finals.

You can still network. Research some of the big firms. Then call up anyone you know who is an attorney at one. If you don't know any, find some people who do and ask them to connect you. Just ask for his or her thoughts on attending law school, what it takes to get a job at that firm, etc, etc...most people love to give that sort of advice.

Don't call it looking for summer employment until December...
