Living with SO and Roomate?

Post by BigLawer » Fri Apr 05, 2013 7:03 pm

So here is an interesting situation I am looking for some anecdotal opinions on.

My and my Fiance live together, I am a 1L. My best friend is thinking about moving out to where we are for next year (just for 1 year). He basically asked if he could live with me and my fiance so we could all save money. We do have a 2 bedroom 1 and 1/2 bathroom, so its feasible and the master is HUGE. Big enough for a queen bed, huge dest, nightstand, TV, and maybe enough room, as one person said "to still play a rugby game in it"

Plus:
-Only paying half of rent, which is really nice. Having a friend I have been close with my whole life in town will be cool. Seems like it would be doing him a favor so he doesnt have to get a 1 bedroom (he said he probably wont move to this state if we dont live together because he doesnt know anyone else here).
-We are getting married over winter break, so this will be the last time i think I would be willing to do something like this, though we will be married for a semester while he is here.

Cons:
Loss of privacy and alone time.

I know this is a very personal decision for me and my Fiance. I was just wondering if anyone has done it and has experience with it. Me and my Fiance were together in UG and (basically) lived together (but each had our own place) with roomates, and that wasnt toooo bad.

bad idea. Also, it's probably only a 1/3 reduction in rent

A little more, we wouldnt split it 1/3 but pretty close. Save us about $7,000 for the year.

Any reason why you say its a bad idea?

1) was only 200 a month more, and this year I used it as an office so I wasnt studying in the bedroom when she was trying to sleep, nice to have a place for the office furniture, but it would easily fit in bedroom

I do this right now and have been doing it for two years without problem. The roommate and SO get along great and it keeps costs down for everyone.

Does it suck not having much privacy? My Fiance and friend get along great, I dont think that would be an issue

The big question is how does your fiance feel about it.

I guess it depends on how the house/apartment is set up. We manage to still have privacy time, it is just more often in my bedroom we watch a movie than the living room.

Yeah, thats the thing. I was the one saying at first, he had to get his own place. Then she said she didnt think it was a bad idea to get a place together. Now he has all his plans set and stuff and she (so am I) is starting to wonder if its a bad idea. I guess she at first thought it was only going to be a semester.

So now she is pretty on the fence like I am

My fiancé and I had a roommate once before and it was fine, but I think 2brm/1.5 ba is really different from 2brm/2ba (which was our situation). For some reason it seems especially weird/intrusive to have to share a shower.

Yeah, that is really annoying to have one shower.

The way the place is set up is like a 3 story townhome.

Basement with washer/dryer. 1st floor with 1/2 bath, livingroom and kitchen and then the top floor has the 2 bedrooms and a bathroom. So its not the best layout for this. Better would have been 2 bedrooms 2 bathrooms with a living room/kitchen separating them lol but it is what it is and I dont think we want to move.

I would add that it saves more than just rent. Utilities/Cable-Internet/splitting Costco grocery trips.

Go watch the first couple seasons of How I Met Your Mother when Ted is living with Marshall and Lily. Is your friend as awesome as Ted? If so, move his ass in.

I have been the third wheel in that situation before. It wasn't a problem. I could accept him even though he was bitchmade.

Ted is objectively the least cool character on the show.

Agreed. But the least cool character on HIMYM is the most cool character on any other show.
