Changing Paths: PI to Corporate

0L here. I've worked quite a while in the PI/policy area. While I'm not yet in law school (so this is all hypothetical), I think I might like going the corporate route.

The problem? No WE in the private sector except for some small start-up gigs (nothing substantial....more like minimal consulting work). Will this work against me once interviews come around?

Again...this is all hypothetical. I know I have "no idea." Just wondering. I'd apply to be a paralegal in a big firm to see what it's like but I think I'm ready to get back to school.

Additionally, I'm wondering if this will hurt me while in law school. While I know there's PLENTY to learn in law school, I'm just more fluent in the language of [insert specific type of PI here] than I am in capital markets and securities. Much more fluent...

It won't hurt you in the least. The vast majority of law school grads who go into corporate practice have no prior business experience. Hell, most of them are liberal arts majors, and a large amount went straight through and have no WE whatsoever. You'll get a taste of what you need to know in law school classes and your firm will teach you the rest.

Dude, you are not changing paths. Every law student and their grandma is a liberal arts major with interests in PI, cute puppies, France and Che Guevara, who now thinks it will be really cool to do corporate work at a NYC skyscraper.

You'll be fine. Any work experience at all is a plus.
