No Scholarship Money = No Donation after Graduation?

Post by silenttimer » Thu Feb 14, 2013 12:35 pm

If you didn't get a scholarship from the school you are attending or attended, would you ever consider giving them money after graduation?

No, in order to be generous, I demand prior generosity. Its the golden rule.

I won't donate money until they fire the dean and I pay off my loans.

Depends on how helpful they are in finding me a job I like. But in any event, probably not for a number of years.

I wouldn't donate even with a full scholarship. I don't donate to any other service provider after using their services, law school is no different.

I'm going to donate to my UG if I end up striking it rich just because their endowment makes me cry when I see it on Wikipedia. Law schools will be taking enough of my money, they deserve nothing more.

My UG fundraising dept is the worst. I once had a meeting with her to get funds for a student event. She was talking smack about alumnae who have iPhones but don't donate to the school. Seriously? The bar is set that low?

I think this is a pretty good rule of thumb. If I ever decided I wanted to give back to my school I would just set up an outside scholarship and give the money directly to the students or whatever I wanted to fund.

This. Or possibly a napping room. Because that would be good.

I got a scholarship and I still wouldn't donate to a freaking law school.

I'd send some money to a Bama football recruit though.

If I had the means someday, I would definitely fund a professorship or an expanded faculty lounge.

I'll donate for sure. I had named scholarships that covered full tuition/fees and were provided by individual donors each year of law school. I feel obligated to direct funds to the school in a way that is similar if I ever have the means to do so.

If those weren't the circumstances, I think I'd still donate because I enjoyed my time at the school and had an objectively favorable outcome, but it wouldn't be to the same extent.

I'm glad you feel that way. (No, I don't mean this sarcastically, despite what I said earlier)

I personally can't justify it in my situation, but schools need people to donate to keep going. They're sometimes a lot of the reason people get scholarships in the first place.

I'd offer to renovate the bathroom if they put up a plaque:

If I ever get the funds, I'll donate money to admitted students who decide NOT to attend. This is for law school in general. This isnt a jab at my school.

I know that a lot of schools care more about the number of alumni who donate over the amount each donate. The theory that it is better to have 15 donors give $5 each instead of 2 giving $40 each.

It's not what they care about, it's more like why in god's name would I donate? If I buy an iphone, I pay the price of the phone and I'm done with it. And I don't ge emails every so often from Apple asking me for a donation. School is just the same. It's not a charity.

I'd give my school $50 for every 1% by which they reduced the cost of attendance.

They're not getting shit from me as long as they're putting each class deeper into debt than the one before.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
