do any current students or recent graduates know what the market is like for those gunning for tax advisory/ consulting positions with the big 4+ other major firms like cbiz, mcgladrey etc.

anybody have any anecdotal insights about how those who aimed for these positions fared? (please include range of schools rank)

it seems like jd graduates who focused on tax law courses seem to have better employment prospects than non tax-law graduates
i know that these firms do not pay biglaw but they pay something around 80k i believe, which is pretty good for the typical law grad who doesnt get biglaw

i was doing some linkedin searches and even at loyola law (Los angeles), there were several graduates who entered in as senior tax managers at big 4

im beginning to think that at the lower ranking schools (non t-14 tier 1) where biglaw is not a probable option , that tax law---> tax consulting at major accounting firm seems to be a relatively safe route (assuming you dont have 250k in loans)

There is no such thing as a safe route ite. Also, everyone and their grandma tries for tax when stuck out of biglaw. I am not saying it is not a good route, it might be the best route for a lot of people, but it is still very far from safe...

And isn't there only three LLM programs in the country that are really considered all that good? I know Georgetown is one.

^ im not talking about people who use it as a backup, or fail jd recruiting(biglaw, clerkship etc) and go for an llm, but rather people who had tax law in mind from the beginning and gunned only for tax law (took relevant courses en route JD, interned big 4, etc)

its not a relatively safer route?

how would you show that it wasn't your backup. everyone can start gunning for tax after they know what happened 1L.

are you a CPA?

Everyone takes the same courses 1L; you can't take any courses/do much else to show that you're really into tax. If you get bad grades 1L, you could then decide to try to gun for tax as a way to get a job, and pretend it was what you wanted all along.

understood, thanks for that. with that said, do you have any anecdotal insights on how people who gun for tax law fare for big 4/ other big accounting firm recruiting from a non t-14 tier 1 (w&l, bc etc) as opposed to biglaw, midlaw jobs?

Nothing too informative, but I do know of some people from Alabama that have gotten Big 4 jobs in Atlanta, Nashville, etc. That being said, they start out wiht a higher pay but the same title as any first year employee out of a Mac/MTA program. Supposedly you make up for this on the back end (shorter term from manager to partner), but you are still considered the same as first-year accountants
