Are URMs really at an advantage comes to LS admissions

Post by wwapd » Wed Dec 12, 2012 11:36 pm

I have read this forum for a few weeks and it seems there are many people who think being a URM is a real boost when it comes to getting into law school. Is this really true? If it is why is this the case? Are some races/ethnicities more "valued" than others and do some schools recruit URMs more than others?

Try searching. Or just try the URM Forum.

Yes.
If it is why is this the case?
Because schools want to be representitive of the general U.S. population. Right now there are way fewer URMs in law school relative to their presence in the country as a whole. Hence they want more UNDER REPRESENTED minorities. Because there are fewer URMs applying to law school, they tend to get in with slightly lower numbers. Not all URMs at law schools have lower numbers though. Some are at or above one or both medians.

Yes, the ones that are least represented relative to the general US population. AA males are the largest disparity.

My younger cousin got into HYS with a lower LSAT than me, and no WE. We're both the same percentage URM but I listed myself as Caucasian on my apps and she didn't. She's prettier and much friendlier than I am, but I beat her on everything else...undergrad rank, gpa, major, languages, WE, everything. It really pisses me off, but despite being 50% URM, I have zero ties to my culture and don't speak one word of the language, so I wasn't about to pull that shit.
