TLS Men's Fashion Gods: What to Buy Before 1L?
Have been trolling the mens mega clothing thread but it seems mostly geared towards 2Ls. For an incoming 1L, how much should I buy now vs. wait? I'm starting my professional wardrobe from absolute scratch. From what I read here so far it sounds like it would be most credited to wait til mid-June for the BB and Nordstrom semi-annual sales and then get:
-Navy Fitz Suit ->get tailored
-Black AE Park Aves & Dark Brown AE Park Aves
-6 BB noniron slims (2 white point collar for suit; 4 white/blue patterned button downs)
-Charcoal, Light Gray and navy regent fit gabardine trousers
-Reversible belt, 6 pairs each of charcoal, brown, navy socks
This sound right? Any need to buy a blazer or a second suit? Am I missing anything? tyia, guys; just trying to knock the clothing stuff out before school starts up.

I'm neither a fashion god nor a 1L yet, but I know you don't need that much for 1L. If you're really trying to plan ahead, it's not a bad investment though. A suit will be useful for interviews, but you don't need a week+ of professional shirts, pants and expensive dress shoes for your first year in law school. Or...any of them until you have a job, I think.
Someone already in, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

This sounds good.
I would also grab a few ties, maybe a few cotton pants, some v-neck sweaters, and good casual shoes that aren't sneakers (chukkas, oxfords, etc).
Also, if you have a slim to normal frame, a Fitzgerald may be too loose of a fit. Go into your local BB to see what fit works for your body type. You want to be fitted without looking too slim/European (if that makes sense).
Also, don't be afraid to get some shirts that aren't white or blue.
Also, you probably don't need both black and dark brown AEs if you're only using a navy suit atm.

Good Lord the fashion fixation on this site has gotten out of control. Now 0Ls, about to go six figures in to debt for law school, are spending thousands on new clothes?

School is CLS/NYU if that matters. I know some people said dress may be a bit dependent on region.

I've never heard of such a thing as the Law School 15. I lost weight during 1L.

Nothing on here has to be expensive. OP was asking for what clothes he should buy.

Fitzgerald suits and two pairs of Park Avenue shoes don't have to be expensive? You can find good deals on both, but it'll still be more than you need to spend. And OP made no mention of finding good deals.

Eh. A good quality suit is going to be $250-400 minimum. BB suits can be found around $350-400 on sale. I agree that two pairs of AEs are over the top. Getting a decent wardrobe doesn't have to cost thousands, and I would consider a decent wardrobe worth the effort going into law school, especially if you're in NYC. You don't want to be talking to a partner at Cravath wearing a Polo shirt.

Doesn't matter which store you get this crap from. Just make sure it fits well and is tailored right. The specifics are just recommendations, and are ultimately up to you. I mean, cmon, you are asking what kind of socks you should buy.

Don't need to worry about any of this until second semester and even then all you need is a suit that will get you through a dozen summer job interviews and a pair of shoes. No need to overinvest.

judging by some of my classmates, what you need to buy is one suit, 13 pairs of sweatpants with your undergrad on it, 5 college hoodies (CLS will provide you with one), and sneakers.
Dude, it's just school

You're paying 50k a year, least they could do is give you a hoodie.
It's just common decency.

Go to Hot Topic and buy as many studded belts as you can. Get black, of course, but also go for the loud colors: pink, turqouise, yellow, etc. For those considering entertainment or even energy law, to a certain extent, you may want to consider picking up a diamond and platinum grill for your teef. Nothing proclaims professionalism and competency like a blinding, icy smile. Also, a good set of hi-tops is crucial in the NY, Chicago, and LA markets. All the new hires in biglaw (whom I've spoken with), have landed offers while sporting a fresh white pair of Jordans.
Depending on your level of commitment to pursuing a legal career, you might be well-advised to get some tattoos, preferably visible ones. Anything on the hands or face shows you mean business, but for God's sake, please stay away from tribal tats; you are probably not part of a tribe.
Don't forget: skinny jeans, fedoras, bolo ties, Heely's, v-neck graphic tees, a chain wallet, leather jacket, mutton chops, those polo shirts with the giant horse on them, anything with glitter, hair gel, LED neckties, sport coats with elbow patches, tye-dye bandanas, flat brim hats, and ugg boots.
Good luck, and always remember: dress for the job you want, not the job you have.

Re: TLS Men's Fashion Gods: What to Buy Before 1L?
As an additional question: What hair gel should a 1L use? I am thinking a pomade to say “I like to look good, but I am too busy doing lawl shit to spend much time fussing with hair”.
I would also appreciate toothpaste suggestions for success (keep in mind I will be going to school in the Midwest) but I don’t want to open up that Pandora’s box of a debate between the “plaque killing /fresh breath is paramount” vs. “white teeth land more biglaw” factions.
