Re: Yale 1L Taking Questions
Just out of curiosity: Were you offered any money in the T-14, and if so, where and how much?
By the way, props on the above 3.96 and 177 LSAT!

Thanks. I got substantial money at all the non-YHS schools I applied to.

What do you do for fun in New Haven?
Are you thinking of going into academia?

Re: Yale 1L Taking Questions
Two questions:
1) I know all aid is theoretically need-based, but do you know of anyone who successfully negotiated for even a little money using a Hamilton/Rubenstein as leverage? If it's possible, do you have any thoughts about how someone might try to do this?
2) What's it like for 1Ls trying for competitive summer positions (like 1L SAs) without any grades?
Thanks!

Re: Yale 1L Taking Questions
Hey!
I was looking through the YLS binder and just kind of perusing the classes listed and I noticed two things I found a little strange. First, there appear to be a truly insane number of emeritus professors and second there are a lot of classes that are co-taught. Do you know why there is a preponderance of co-taught classes? Have you found them to be beneficial? Detrimental? I guess I'm just kind of looking for first-hand experience with these realities.

Re: Yale 1L Taking Questions
1) What do you do for fun in New Haven? Normal stuff. This city is not as much of a dump as people think. There are plenty of good bars and restaurants. You learn pretty quickly what parts of town are safe and what parts are unsafe.
2) Academia was certainly in the back of my mind when I came to YLS and was part of the reason I went here. But my interests are shifting towards the practical this semester and I will most likely be going the clerkship to biglaw route. The future academic crowd is a small portion of the law school and people tend to forget that 70% of YLS students go into private practice. During first semester most of us tried to pretend to have more interesting ambitions than being a lawyer, but now most people are willing to admit that they will most likely be a practicing lawyer after graduation.
3) I'm working at a USAO in a big city. Applied December 1st and got the job sometime in January with no interview.
4) I don't have any inside knowledge about people negotiating for higher aid, but I had substantial merit based at other schools and YLS really stunned me--in a good way--with the size of their offer. Then again, I never heard about someone getting the offer increased later on.
5) As far as competitive summer positions, people had a variety of experiences. Everyone I know has a job at this point. Most people who really wanted firms and went after firms got them. Competitive government jobs has been a bit of a crapshoot. But generally people with high quality and relevant work experience got the first/best offers, and people straight from undergrad with weaker resumes had to look a little harder.
6) No experience with co-taught classes. I have heard really good things about a few of the co-taught classes being offered this semester. Generally the professors who do these classes like each other and like teaching together.
Keep the questions coming guys!

Re: Yale 1L Taking Questions
Thanks so much for taking questions! I know you can start participating in clinics the second semester of 1L at Yale, how many people choose to do this and how active are the clinics? Also, how have you enjoyed your classmates/overall experience at Yale? Again, thanks!

Re: Yale 1L Taking Questions
I choose not to do a clinic this year, but it seems like most of the class has decided to start one.
As far as my other classmates go, I generally like but I tend to think that they is too much intemperance and liberalism among the law students. I'm a simple kid with strong values from the Midwest and am ashamed at the level of premarital sex that is taking place here. Something everyone should think about before coming to Yale.

Hell, my school is disturbingly liberal, to the extreme end of the spectrum. But the premarital sex helps takes me mind off it

Well, to each his own. I'd just rather not go to Bar Review and hear about/watch a bunch of intemperate gadabouts succumbing to their most base urges.
Other questions?

Also, open invitation to any admitted students. I'd be happy to meet with anyone during the March orientation or ASW.
