I'm going to go out on a limb here, but I'd say that graduating from Harvard at the bottom of your class is still probably better from a status and possible job opportunity standpoint than graduating at the top of your class from a lower ranked, less known school.
I hope to God this is true, but sadly I don't think it is.

It isn't far from true. the relationship between class rank and job prospects are nearly inverted when comparing, say, Harvard and UConn, all things being equal (geographic location etc). Lower class ranked - even the lowest class ranked - Harvard grads stand a comparable if not better chance at biglaw than UConn top 15% grads, I'd imagine.
