I'll be attending GW in the fall, so I am wondering what is the best timeline to high tail it to D.C, start housing search (if I am not living on campus), and get oriented with the city? I currently live and work in Toronto. For example, when would be a good date to leave my job?

Most apartments in DC, especially those near schools, open up in either May or August. Since you'll be starting your search from scratch, you're much better off trying to land a lease in May - also, you'll want to hop on that before all the Kongressional Kiddies get here for the summer and start saving the world (and takin yo' leasez).
