I do not think that this is necessarily a strong reflection of the views of all those in attendance as there is always an eclectic taste in interior design of frat houses. However, the part in ABL where is said that a black kid was referred to with as a "n word".......that is poor taste and is not acceptable no matter how drunk you are.
See but I equate the confederate flag with the Swastika. If their were Jewish people and the Swastika was on the table would it be acceptable? I know people from the south don't see it but that's the way I feel. If people from UVA view it as an "eclectic taste in interior design", which many of the comments say that they do, I don't want to go there. I'm not saying I'm definitely right or their beliefs are definitely wrong but I know I would be a lot less comfortable with people who held this opinion. Law school is already tough enough, IMO, without this type of stuff.

I know for a fact that the undergrad is extremely segregated, not unlike the majority of VA. I would assume that the law school is different considering it probably has more out of state students. Is Mr. Jefferson's school racist? Since it's not a black and white issue (pun intended), it depends...
For instance, a black guy from Mississippi may say "Wow, UVA seems very welcoming to minorities," a black guy from Boston may say "Wow, what the fuck is up with all of this racial hostility at this school?" and someone like I am, from VA, would probably say "well, that's Virginia for you." It is all relative. At the end of the day, one should go to school where they feel most comfortable for whatever reason (or where they get the most money/highest ranking

If we both go to UVA we gotta hangout
. Which ASW you going to?
Yeah man, definitely. I'm going to the one on the 18th of March. I didn't know there was more than one ASW? Which one are you going to?
The other one that's on 1 April. I'll be in Europe in march.

if you know people from Boston or how Boston is they would probably think UVA was a bastion of racial harmony haha, seriously i've encountered far more racist sentiments in Chicago (where i'm from) than UVA it's not even close really, it's kinda laughable that people think northern cities aren't racist, this may be true of the affluent parts of those cities but if you go to the more blue collar areas you'll find it to be quite a different story
Seriously though people of all races are very much accepted at our school, it's really not an issue...
I'm from Chicago and I've lived in Columbia, S.C. (FT. Jackson) and Ft. Rucker Alabama (named for a confederate Soldier). And I couldn't disagree with you more. Yeah there is a lot of craziness in Chicago, getting pulled over all the time, I'm from Engelwood and I was frisked by cops for the first time when I was ten because I was outside near a corner. It's crazy but if given a choice I'd pick Chicago any day. At least the citizens act civil in public. I was at a party In a place called Aiken, GA and I should have known from the setting that it wasn't gonna turn out good but I didn't want to judge these people by appearances. There were the confederate flags and pick up trucks but I drove there with a white friend and he wanted to meet this girl so I stayed. Anyway they began telling jokes and the jokes were so vile and racist I won't even repeat them but needless to say I got my friend and we began to leave and the host of the party was like "what you leaving for" like it was normal to tell these jokes in front of me. I've never encountered that type of in your face racism in Chicago or Boston or NY or LA. That is just one example of a dozen incidents I had in the south and I couldn't wait for the Army to move me. But I never viewed VA like that because I been to DC and to Charlottesville and it didn't seem like "the south".

Just curious - how many minority students do you have in your 1L class?

There around 36 or so blacks, and many who identify as Asian. Very few Native Americans (any?) to my knowledge. Realistically if you're from the NE or California it may cause you some culture shock. If you're from the deep south you may not consider it to be southern at all. It's all relative. That said, whoever threw that party and kept up the confederate flags was a fool.

lol that a pretty accurate guess, got keep tabs on that number. j/k it just made me smile that the number of blacks in the LS is common knowledge. I think it would have been different if you said a little over 30 or about 35 but 36 sounds so specific.

you're kidding. i thought like 27% of the class was URM last year? AA is only 10% of this?

If you think that's particularly shocking you haven't been paying attention to top law school demographics in general.
None of the top 14 law schools have an AA contingent of over 10 percent. In fact, as Kohinoor said, that's a record high. Harvard has the highest percentage of Blacks by a decent margin (I believe). And ironically enough I believe that Berkeley and Stanford have some of the lowest percentages of Blacks (considering that there supposed to be in ultra minority friendly California). If I'm not mistaken Stanford has frequently had 1L classes with 10 or fewer Blacks. Contrary to what TLS may have you believe, Blacks are not "stealing" seats at the top schools. Or if they are, they aren't "stealing" very many.

As someone who lives in the region, I'd like to clarify that not all of us are Confederate-loving rednecks. In fact, many in Appalachia were against the confederacy. Anyway, that doesn't make this flag shit right and I find it ridiculous that people still cling to this symbol with pride.

That's true, but we are discussing the incident at UVA specifically. Finding racists elsewhere does not negate anything.

My mom just told me to apply to UVA when I decided to google racism at UVA and this article came up. Personally, having grown up in the metro DC area, I feel uncomfortable knowing that this event even occurred. I currently go to Michigan and something like this would have caused the administration to step in. Anyway I was apparently right about avoiding anything south of Maryland...

(1) Exactly how do you expect the administration to step in? A non-official party, at a rented, privately owned frat house had a couple of confederate flags. Offensive? Possibly. But, do you really expect the administration to take action against anyone? On what grounds?
(2) Your prejudice against "anything south of Maryland" is patently offensive. Way to make broad assumptions about 1/4 of the nation. I was born in Virginia and have lived in Virginia for 80% of my life—Does this make me a racist in your opinion?
(3) You clearly have a preconceived notion about UVA if you are googling UVA+racism.
(4) Outside of a single party, at a rented private fraternity house that involve the playing of a beer pong game called civil war that included both american and confederate flags, has anyone here,
who attends UVA, expressed serious concerns about race relations at UVA law?
If anything, you should have noticed that the average UVA law student has expressed their disapproval.

+1 I'm a black 0L and the UVA law students in this thread and on TLS in general are seriously one of the main reasons i'm considering going to school "south of Maryland".

lol if you're upset by this check out the graph below. Harvard lead the way but the next 3 places are held by the three most "southern law schools" UVA, Duke, and Georgetown. In terms of diversity when it comes to black students the southern schools lead the way.

Don't let that article influence your LS decision... Racism exists everywhere, as an alum of UVA for undergrad I can tell you Charlottesville is a cosmopolitan place that isn't any more or less racist than Boston, New York, or any other major city.
