What type of law are you intending to practice? How is the public interest program?

I currently, and I stress currently, am interested in either real estate or working for the PD/SAO. I have a strong background in real estate, law will be my second career.

In regards to the public interest program(s) they are extensive. IF you are interested in getting involved there are numerous externships/volunteer opportunities/placement programs etc. There is also a strong trial advocacy team and moot court program. For you, this means, great resume boosters for SAO/PD/city in house.

Last night I attended a public interest Q and A with 6 prominent public interest figures in the Miami area, and it was helpful. The opportunities are abundant, but you have to go after it.

I also am friends with a guy who got to intern for JAG, and will be doing so again this summer hoping for job offer.

I repeatedly hear from that it is difficult but possible to find a decent summer internship. Not to be overly prying, but have you found a summer position in real estate or PD/SAO?

Well my situation is somewhat unique if you are a full time student. I am an evening student. During the year I am employed at a law office and have been promoted to the position of law clerk. I am going to do that three days per week this summer, and I secured a state judicial clerkship this summer. Next summer I am going to try to get a state appellate clerkship. I am currently looking for a law clerk position in a law firm that focuses on real estate. I have not been able to find many opportunities, not because of my school but because of the lack of positions. Combine that with my requirements of needing a year round position it is a challenge. I am employed now, and I know many of my classmates have secured summer employment (we are 1Ls and evening students at that so we are not very marketable for high paying summer positions). I do know one of my classmates secured a position with the SEC for Fall. It is about networking and good grades. The career services is AWESOME!! They work hard for us.

When I first chose FIU over UM I was worried about the job prospects, now that I am here I am more than satisfied with my choice. I would not choose UM, the low cost of attendance is such a plus, and the faculty at FIU is really top notch, really.

I wrote this fast without any editing, please excuse any typographical errors.

Great, that is very helpful! I like hearing that students are finding opportunities. I definitely found all of the faculty I met at a BBQ to be very knowledgeable. I am looking forward to getting started in the fall.

Hello, thanks again for the help, I have a couple more questions for you.

Do you think a prelaw 101 type course would be beneficial before getting started in the fall? I am pretty sure I am going to take one, just seeing if you think it would be well-worth the time and money.

And are there any specific apartment complexes that you know about and could recommend (or deter people from)? I don't particularly know the Miami area and am having a hard time finding nearby, safe, inexpensive housing.

And , if you don't mind my asking, how is your bar prep-going? I saw the February bar results and noted FIU did very well, is there a lot of student support?

I just finished my 1L year. I am a full-time student. It takes some persistence, but yes it is possible. Most of my colleagues / friends either did the summer study abroad program or got decent summer internships. I was fortunate enough to get a great summer internship. Yes, I have several classmates that are currently interning at the PD or SAO this summer.
