Not much to offer, other than that the programs seem pretty solid, and give their relatively small size and cost, I don't see the Federal government canceling its public service loan forgiveness program. Honestly, though, I am basing this off of very little fact.runrunrun wrote:What do you think of the Public Interest LRAP? It seems absolutely great - and honestly, it is the one thing that might have me pick Georgetown over a much less well-known, free alternative (USD) because I don't want to enter a public interest career with a long debt battle.
I am fully committed to PI, but what are the chances, in your opinion, that somehow during the 10 years I'm hoping to receive LRAP and then get my debt discharged by the government that something happens in between and either the Public Service IBR scheme or Georgetown's LRAP gets repealed and I fall through the cracks and end up paying around $100,000 I was hoping to avoid?
Fact or opinion would be much appreciated

My concern with Georgetown's LRAP is that if you don't do the full 10 years in PI then you owe all of the amount borrowed whereas other schools have programs that are not initially as generous but the loan is paid as you work. Is my understanding correct?

I'm not on a PI track so I haven't looked into the LRAP that much, but my understanding is that the loans georgetown gives you through the program are forgiven regularly as you maintain your PI position. I don't want to mischaracterize the plan, so the details may be found at the link below.Emma1 wrote:My concern with Georgetown's LRAP is that if you don't do the full 10 years in PI then you owe all of the amount borrowed whereas other schools have programs that are not initially as generous but the loan is paid as you work. Re: Georgetown 3L twiddling thumbs 'til graduation: questions?
There are so many factors that go into this equation, most of them are determined by your personal interests, alternative options, and your desired risk on your investment. I would say that for me it would have been a good investment even with only $10k a year in scholarships because of my entire package of interests and options. For someone who only wants their shot at big-law and nothing else, then you might be able to do better depending on the markets you want to land in. The LRAP is fairly generous comparatively, so that hedges some of the risk if you're willing to consider government and other PI employment, but there is still the risk that those wont be options for you. Also, if the economy starts to improve, your odds of landing big-law or PI will improve greatly. Then, of course, there are considerations about what fields of law you are interested in and what markets you want to practice. I can't be very helpful without more information I'm afraid.theturkeyisfat wrote:question for the 3L - is GTown a good financial decision with a 10k/yr scholly?

Curious as to what, if any, response has been to the USNEWS ranking release

I haven't hear anything at all from students or administration about it. There is this post in the Georgetown Law Weekly: --LinkRemoved--. I don't think many people here are very rankings sensitive.nietzsche13 wrote:Curious as to what, if any, response has been to the USNEWS ranking release
Personally, I don't really care. It's not going to change placement power or prestige, it's just a for-profit magazine trying to drum up business, but them I'm someone who chose Georgetown over higher USNWR ranked schools so I might not be the best person to ask.

I already have 3 professors willing to write me LORs from past semesters but I am taking a law class with a Gtown JD professor should kiss a** in office hours to get him to write me a LOR? I guess I am asking would his letter be worth that much more?

I'm going to be in DC this weekend to tour GULC, among other things. Are there any bars/restaurants/favorite law student hangouts that I should make sure to visit while I'm there?

I think it could potentially help you if you were a marginal admit, but I'm pretty sure admissions is largely a numbers game.predent/prelaw wrote:I already have 3 professors willing to write me LORs from past semesters but I am taking a law class with a Gtown JD professor should kiss a** in office hours to get him to write me a LOR? Re: Georgetown 3L twiddling thumbs 'til graduation: questions?
Because of our size, students hang out all over the town. The Billy Goat is our local bar, and a lot of the clubs and student organizations will have quick happy hours and what not there. People also go to Kelly's Irish Times which is a block away from campus. Plenty more hang out in Chinatown - Fado, Rocketbar, RFD, etc; other times we hang out in Dupont; U Street; Columbia Heights, Georgetown, and even Maryland and Virginia (for students who live in the hinterlands). We have bar reviews that, when I've attended, seem to draw a fairly large crowd, so if you're in town on a Thursday night you should ask a student where those will be held (they are throughout the town). Also the 930 Club and other live music venues get some great bands, so I try to get to those shows as often as I can. The student body is really diverse and DC has plenty to do, so if you want to find a particular kind of nightlife, you probably can.Magnolia wrote:I'm going to be in DC this weekend to tour GULC, among other things. Question for the OP: Do you know anyone who got admitted after late March, i.e., the last scheduled reception for admitted students? I haven't heard back yet from the admissions office, and the last reception is tomorrow, so I'm starting to expect a ding...

I think I was admitted in early April. I know that at the time I was admitted, I had already deposited at Cornell or Vandy. I applied late and was initially put on the "preferred waitlist." I wouldn't lose hope.noona wrote:Question for the OP: Do you know anyone who got admitted after late March, i.e., the last scheduled reception for admitted students? Re: Georgetown 3L twiddling thumbs 'til graduation: questions?
OK, thank you. I applied late and only to the part-time program, but I never got on any kind of a waitlist. I suspect I have an application that at least some on their admissions committee may be wrestling with: so-so stats around the median, but exceptional softs. So I have no idea what's going on with my application. I've been trying to stay optimistic, but it's a lot harder now due to the delay + news of people getting admitted off the waitlists.Nogameisfair wrote:I think I was admitted in early April. Another question for the OP: Is it easy/hard for students to get a leave of absence for a semester? (Not during the first year.) For example, if the student wants to go work on a political campaign and has to temporarily relocate. I've heard anecdotal stories of students elsewhere doing that.

I can easily think of three people who took a semester of leave to have babies. Another one is off doing a 1 year master's degree - I don't think it's a big issue.

Was also on the preferred waitlist and I think I got in in May - after I'd put down a deposit somewhere else.Nogameisfair wrote:I think I was admitted in early April. Have you heard of students taking courses at the Georgetown main campus (at the grad school or business school)?
Any thoughts re: getting a firm job on the West Coast after graduation?
Thanks!

Re: Georgetown 3L twiddling thumbs 'til graduation: questions?
I have a couple friends who are doing joint degrees on main campus. I think I've only heard of one person who wasn't doing a joint degree and took a class on the main campus. It is definitely an option for law students, but realistically, the main campus is a pain to get to so most people don't do it.wiseguy33 wrote:Have you heard of students taking courses at the Georgetown main campus (at the grad school or business school)?

As far as West Coast firms, I think we have plenty who come to OCI. I have friends going to many of the big LA and SF firms, though my experience is limited because I have no interest on going to the left coast.

Re: Georgetown 3L twiddling thumbs 'til graduation: questions?
I think I had this option. It was a 30k a year plus housing stipend for the first year? Something like that. My offer at Georgetown was a little over half this offer, and I thought the increased opportunities more than outweighed the money. It's a bit intangible, but there's definitely a feeling that Georgetown students have their pick of jobs and internships, whereas GW students have to try a bit harder. That's been my experience with the students from GW with whom I've interacted (I meet quite a few through my clinic). Part of it was perhaps a bit of prestige whoring on my part. It's hard to say if I made the right choice, but I'm happy with it now.bender18 wrote:Did any Georgetown students have the option of either GW w/105k or Georgetown at sticker? Re: Georgetown 3L twiddling thumbs 'til graduation: questions?
I have a question regarding transportation. I'm trying to create budgets for my different options -- I'm assuming you don't (or most don't) have a car in DC and rather use the metro. What would you say is the average monthly cost of using the metro I tried to look up if there were student passes and there don't seem to be. Do you pay by individual fare? Thanks!
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
