Yeah, if you live in not-Boystown Lakeview, keep the car. But I wouldn't want to deal with one in Lincoln Park or Gold Coast.
Sorry, what does this mean?
cookiejar1 wrote:For what it's worth you can pay for parking near school (look up the requirements . . . you might have to live "x" miles away from school) and it's extremely cheap for unlimited parking in streeterville (<$600 for the whole year?). If you don't mind paying a premium for a place that comes with a parking spot then taking a car isn't too horrible.

It's an added cost, yes, but sometimes it's nice to just drive to school instead of standing on public transportation. Especially during the dead of winter . . . you can drive to school's parking lot and walk through all the hospitals until you get to within 2 blocks of the school. Minimizes your outside time to <10 minutes!

Having a car in Chicago is nice. You don't need it but it's not as impracticable as having a car in NYC, for example.
Is that the school parking permit? I read on the site that you even if you live more than 2-3 miles away (their requirements), parking passes are not guaranteed. Anyone know what the likelihood of getting one if I apply is? And what/where is the unlimited Streeterville parking (or are you just talking about in the apartment buildings)?

Thanks again!

The part of lakeview called Boystown (the neighborhood right by the lake around Belmont) is awful for street parking.

There are usually soccer and basketball teams made of law students. If you want anything else, you may have to schlep up to the main campus. (Which is not impossible; I played on the university's women's club hockey team all three years, but it can a pain and a time suck).

Hmmm, I wonder why the discrepancy. I guess I won't find out if mine is working for sure until I try it later. I just logged into Ventra again though and it says my status is active and I'm still good until May 15th.

What do most people's families and friends dress like at convocation and the reception after? Suit? Business casual?

Last year my parents wore business casual-ish. That seemed to be the norm, although there was a variety of course.

Moving to Chicago in June. Any recommendations on what to do or explore before starting in the fall?

Hang out on the beach and drink. Check out rooftop bars downtown. Explore the museums and Lincoln Park Zoo. Get a divvy bike and ride around on the lake path. Explore the many drunk brunch options. Go to some Sox games and a rooftop at a Cubs game (but fuck the Cubs, go Sox). Check out Humboldt Park (the actual park). Find someone with a rooftop pool to hang out with. Hang out in Millennium and Grant Parks. Go up to Milwaukee during Summerfest (you can take a bus or train). While there, drink Spotted Cow and eat a bunch of cheese curds.

Ugh I'm so jealous.

Hi guys, I'm currently deciding between NU and Michigan and wanted to pick your brains!

I'm a K-JD, and I am wondering if this will put me a bit out of place at NU, in terms of social scene and employment prospects. What do you think?

I'm also curious if there are any employment differences between the two schools- it looks like NU does better in big law placement, but is this more of a self-selection issue? Thanks!!!

First question: No. There are more K-JDs than ever (since before the work experience thing started here). It might help if you've at least worked some kind of job in your life so you're not entirely clueless about the world, but socially you'll probably be fine. Most of the students are bewteen 23 and 28. Not exactly a different generation from you. I was far more out of place at age 33 as a 1L.

Second question: I think a common theory is that Mich's employment is hurt by not having a major home market. This may have the effect of making ties more important than ever (aside from getting jobs in NY), since the school doesn't provide any real ties anywhere. I don't know off the top of my head how the two schools place in NY relative to each other, but NU certainly places better in Chicago.

Communicate now with those who not only know what a legal education is, but can offer you worthy advice and commentary as you complete the three most educational, yet challenging years of your law related post graduate life.

Thanks :)

Would a K-JD be at a disadvantage in the Chicago market competing against NU students who have WE?

Against someone who worked for 7 years as an accountant, sure. Against someone who taught middle school english for a year, only minimally.

Generally having work experience will help, especially when targeting competitive firms and markets. With that being said, the bump is largely negligible when compared to the relative weight given to your 1L GPA during the hiring process. In most cases, your GPA will trump all. So don't worry about coming to NU with little-to-no work experience.

Hey all thanks for answering our questions! Looked back a ways on the thread and couldn't find an answer to this, so what would you say are the best complexes to live in that are within walking distance of the school? I've been reading online reviews and they mostly all sound the same--was wondering what the inside scoop was

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
