It actually seems to be more of an undergrad thing. I've gotten some shit from former NU undergrads about my choice of school but... haven't really had any issues with everyone else.

Guess I'm sort of a weird hybrid though.

I don't even think UofC/NU is much of a rivalry among undergrads, since they aren't in the same sports conference (or even Division). NU's Big 10 rival is Illinois.

That's true for sports. But there's still this sort of strange academic rivalry between the two schools. I didn't know it was as widespread as it was until I went to grad school.

There is actually a Whirlyball competition between the UofC and NU Law Reviews, named the Mayer Brown Cup. So there is some rivalry. The UofC team played its ringers every round and did not drink, thus ensuring a win this year, but I'm pretty sure that (1) we had far more fun; and more importantly (2) one of our players allegedly stole the trophy after it was awarded to the UofC team. Even if (1) and (2) are not true, there are two other reasons why we won regardless of the final score. First, none of us wore shirts that said "Make Love, Not Law Review." Second, our school was not depicted in these truly horrifying YouTube videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0UN_ZIaYjQ and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0UN_ZIaYjQ.

That hardly seems sporting of them.

And yet... still not going to my trivia night. You disappoint me Sidgey (you probably have a good reason, but I'm still going to use a sadface). :(

I am trolling the employment area ... I am such a user.

I had heard that L&SC is really good. When I told one professor that I was taking 14th, he told me that LACS is the real 14th class at NU. I ended up taking neither though because of the huge reading load of LASC.

Bar night turnout was lower than usual last night, but we compensated by getting correspondingly more drunk. At least I did. :)

How does the Northwestern curve work? How hard is to tell median from top 40% from top60% since they don't publish rank.

It's really tough to say where the top 40% and 60% falls. I haven't received many good answers. The median is believed to be b/w a 3.35 and a 3.40 and the top 1/3 is believed to be a 3.65.

I've never been so happy for it to be barely above freezing.

Cum laude (roughly top third or top 30%) is 3.65 at graduation, and grades float up a bit during 2L and 3L. My guess would be that top third after 1L is more like 3.60.

Dean's List is also purportedly a 3.50 ... not sure if there is any significance there with respect to percentile, but top 40% would appear reasonable.

I'm not even sure what this means:

"A full-time undergraduate student may be placed on the Dean's List for a particular semester if his or her grade point average for that semester is 3.50 after rounding off to the nearest hundredth of a point."

Do they mean law student?

Anyone else notice how this thread has just devolved into NU students chatting with each other? ... which we do at school every day anyway. Nice.

It's because only 12 and 1/2 students have been admitted yet. Admissions are taking their time.

Actually, I have a question a 1L can answer. When does the first loan payment come through? I'm assuming way too late for me to use it to defray moving expenses, apartment deposit, etc.

Also, what's a typical security deposit in Chicago? Is it rent x 2? Seems like deposit laws and practices vary substantially by region.

The loans usually hit by the end of the first week of classes. As for the security deposit, in my experience it's been a month's rent, but that varies from place to place and some buildings also have additional fees like move-in or elevator reservation fees to add on top of it.
