Re: Northwestern Students Taking Questions and Challenges
i would say it's somewhat competitive. people know the economy is bad and that they're not going to be handed jobs. a lot of people in our class got laid off in the recession and seem like they have something to prove. that's my experience anyway. except the JD-MBAs who generally stop gunning halfway in.Ragged wrote:How competative is your class? second time I'm hearing this about JD/MBAers being less competative, why is that?IAFG wrote:i would say it's somewhat competitive. people know the economy is bad and that they're not going to be handed jobs. a lot of people in our class got laid off in the recession and seem like they have something to prove. that's my experience anyway. except the JD-MBAs who generally stop gunning halfway in.Ragged wrote:How competative is your class? Up until the second half of the semester, I feel like most people were doing the reading and sometimes reading supplements, but nothing too intense. Before finals, we all (of course) got a little crazy with the studying.Ragged wrote:How competative is your class? Is everyone studying 5hrs/day?
Everyone wants to do well, but I wouldn't necessarily say "competitive" is the right word for it. For the most part people are pretty open about sharing and trying to help with things.

Re: Northwestern Students Taking Questions and Challenges
It seems like it varied section by section but it was surprising non competitive. Everyone did the work necessary to learn the material, a few really gunned, but most just did what they needed to.Ragged wrote:How competative is your class? Is everyone studying 5hrs/day?
My section was extremely collaborative. Things like emailing each other parts of outlines, taking practice tests together, answering questions were extremely common.
IAFG set off a arms race of gunning in her section from the way she tells it. In mine that didn't happen.

How often do you hook up with someone of the opposite (or same) gender? What's the party scene like up there?

people go out a lot. i was worried that the proportion of olds/marrieds would mean people don't go out a lot but they do.rad law wrote:How often do you hook up with someone of the opposite (or same) gender? What's the party scene like up there?

Just a couple questions on housing.
What percentage of people live right next to campus vs. living further out, and is it worth the extra rent to be closer?

Most 1Ls live near school; I do not because I think Steeterville sucks and is highly overpriced.Flustercluck wrote:Just a couple questions on housing.

i know HGL will handle the other side... i would guess 75% live in streeterville the first year and move to other neighborhoods for 2L. i did and i thought it was worth it. when it's 2 a.m. and snowing, being two blocks from home is nice. it will be the most annoying when it matters most (right before and during finals).Flustercluck wrote:Just a couple questions on housing.

OTOH, as long as you live somewhere that's reasonably accessible via public transportation, the commute really is not a big deal at all. And you can get twice the space for the same price. For what a lot of my friends pay for studios, I have a fairly large 1-bedroom loft with central air, diswasher, in-unit laundry, etc.IAFG wrote:i know HGL will handle the other side... i would guess 75% live in streeterville the first year and move to other neighborhoods for 2L. i did and i thought it was worth it. when it's 2 a.m. and snowing, being two blocks from home is nice. it will be the most annoying when it matters most (right before and during finals).Flustercluck wrote:Just a couple questions on housing.

Any neighborhoods you recommend looking into/best ways to find places other than say craigslist?Holly Golightly wrote:OTOH, as long as you live somewhere that's reasonably accessible via public transportation, the commute really is not a big deal at all. it would be for me, because i hate commuting when i am working long hours. basically, it's a personal question and you have to know yourself. though i do think if you've never seen snow before, you should err away from a long commute.Holly Golightly wrote:OTOH, as you live somewhere that's reasonably accessible via public transportation, the commute really is not a big deal at all.

Yea 2am two nights before your first final and it's 12 degrees out. You don't want to have to catch a bus.IAFG wrote:i know HGL will handle the other side... i would guess 75% live in streeterville the first year and move to other neighborhoods for 2L. i did and i thought it was worth it. when it's 2 a.m. and snowing, being two blocks from home is nice. it will be the most annoying when it matters most (right before and during finals).Flustercluck wrote:Just a couple questions on housing.
