I know the hlsdope ringleader posts here, but interested in hearing from others about the relative value of the ACS v. FedSoc v. HLSdope outline banks.

If it has an outline for a class that you're taking, it's valuable. If not, it's not. That sounds glib, but it's not clear to me that there's anything more specific that can be said.

I'm not much of a notetaker so I rely almost exclusively on preexisting outlines (when they are available) and did alright last year. But I will admit that some of the preexisting outlines are horrifyingly bad. Like wrong information, mixed up cases, and all other kinds of mistakes that make you wonder how the person got an H or DS.

If, like me, you cannot seem to take adequate notes regardless of how hard you try, the key is to find one or two good outlines, that seem to have all the right info and aren't like 100 pages, and then edit for your own stylistic preferences and any missing or inaccurate info.

new yorkers do not live this way
+1 I have a lot of non-lawyer friends in NYC. None leave work at 5pm.
You can find New York jobs where you work less. But expect to make 60k at best and still leave at 6:30.

Sounds like you should be shooting for fed govt jobs, not law firms

Well, that is the goal, but options are good.

They're basically equivalent. Outline banks tend to be most useful for BLL classes, and for many of those courses the prof has taught basically the same materials for many years (see, eg, the Corps profs). Both outline banks will have accumulated a large sample size, including at least a couple good ones (good meaning the outlining style that suits your learning preferences)

Soapbox moment: all this discussion of whose outlines are best is incredibly dumb and could be avoided if more people upload their stuff to HLSdope. equal access to information should satisfy both conservatives who like symmetrical information flows and liberals who like equal opportunity, right?

this is undoubtedly where we will be in say 10-20 years

What's a good LRW book that teaches you what should go into a memo, rather than just general writing tips like "be concise, use the active voice"?

My first memo wasn't as good as I thought it was (assuming LRW also follows the rough rule that an H is top 3rd, I was basically a high P, and it's humbling to learn that a third of the class wrote better memos).

Also, I've never really made clerking a priority, but is a P in LRW basically a death knell for competitive clerkships?

I joined both last year. Between the two, I would say I used ACS substantially more, but that was only because ACS used to give you access to their entire bank (they no longer do) and HLS Dope wasn't a thing yet. I ended up pulling heavily from other professors for two of my classes (which is not something I would typically recommend, but there were some weird circumstances in play). For the two classes where I could just use a straight pre-existing outline, I liked FedSoc ones better. This was probably just a major function of my classes and personal preference.

In the spring, I primarily just used outlines from HLS Dope, got the same exam grades.

If you want to join one, I would just go with your political preference. I don't regret joining both, but with HLS Dope now in play, I don't think it's necessary (it probably never was, but especially not now).

The short answer is no. Some judges don't like it, but overall grades and prof refs matter a lot more.

Serious question: Why are people so stingy with outlines they make or have access to? The only way it could matter is if they get an H because of it and you don't get an H because that one extra H pushed you into a P. And that's never going to happen. So what is going on?

Is it really that unlikely to end up with H with a P on closed memo? I don't think I am high P.

Bluebook quizzes and open memo are probably worth more combined, so it's technically possible, but you'd obviously need to change what you're doing on your open memo to get an H on it. Maybe some BSAs have a different (more informed) perspective.

i think you probably would have to have killed everything else (see above for differing views on this issue). just keep in mind, this is one class out of five so plan your time strategically given this

So much blind leading the blind on this topic. Multiple professors don't give any Hs on the closed memo. Multiple professors don't do a "P+" or whatever. I would also be moderately surprised if most professors actually gave a crap about BB quizzes. Open memo is what matters. Focus on that.

Jealousy, inferiority, anger that someone didn't work as harder, general analness that lawyers display.

Glannon? I went a few years back. Sort of helpful, but nothing that you can't pick up from Getting to Maybe and the like. But if you don't have anything else to do for a couple hours, I'd go.
